Written at the time of the federation movement, the letters refer to the formation of branch leagues, arrangements for branch meetings attended by platform speakers, donations towards the federal campaign, allocation of space for polling places, and the supply of badges and literature, in the form of pamphlets and reports, to fellow federationists. Preceded by an alphabetical index of recipients of letters (1 v.).
Background
The Central Federation League was formed in June 1893 as part of Edmund Barton's campaign after the failure of the Convention Bill of 1892. Edward Dowling, with A.P. Canaway, was appointed as joint secretary-treasurer. Following Canaway's resignation in 1897, Dowling became sole honorary secretary and was secretary of the Australasian Federation League of New South Wales until 1909. Atlee Hunt became general secretary of the Federal League of Australasia in 1899. The League was dissolved in 1909.
