Introduction

Scope and Contents

The papers in this collection were compiled from background research Professor Webb's book on Communism and Democracy in Australia : A Survey of the 1951 Referendum. The collection consists mainly of newspaper clippings and is divided into subject files.

The subject files are divided into a number of different categories: a) groups who commented on the referendum e.g. manufacturers, public servants; b) individuals who took part in the controversy e.g. Eddie Ward, Senator McKenna; c) types of comment e.g. editorials, letters to the editor; d) pre and post referendum clippings; e) parliamentary comment, and; f) clippings advocating either "Yes" or "No".

Also included in the collection are a number of pamphlets together with a small amount of notes and correspondence.

These papers are the only extant papers of Professor Webb, the rest of his papers being burned in a warehouse fire while in storage during the 1960's.
