Borlase, James Skipp - Biographical and publicity material (File 1)

Consisting of: (a) Form letter, signed by Borlase, and sent to George Redway on 1 January 1898 (2 pp.) (b) "Press Notices of Skipp Borlase's Published Books", prepared by Borlase (1895) (4 pp.) (c) Offprint of biographical notice which appeared in the Derby Reporter (c. 1883) (approx. 1000 words). Previously unknown and significant biographical information about Borlase is contained in the above documents.

Lindsaar, Peeter - Correspondence with Terence O'Neill (File 1)

Consisting of: Two letters, dated 1 May 1985 (1p.) and 20 May 1985 (1p.), to Terence O'Neill, concerning Vana Hobune (see previous entry) and other works by him. Included is a copy of a letter from Terence O'Neill to Peeter Lindsaar, dated 8 May 1985.

Unpublished manuscript of a novel (c. 1970?). 87 typed foolscap pages. The story of an Australian girl in England. Does not appear to have been intended for children, although all the published works by this author are for children.

Thors, Mande - Letter from her son, Philip A. Thors, to Terence O'Neill (File 2)

Dated 10 March 1986 (1p.), supplying biographical information, and bibliographical details of his mother's books. Photocopies of the various dust wrappers and of the complete story Playful Pets [1945 - Muir 1:843(a)] are attached. Copy of letter from Terence O'Neill to Philip Thors, dated 7 February 1986, is also included.

Jean Maddocks - three letters to Terence O'Neill (File 3)

Jean Maddocks (née Moreton), illustrator of previous entry. Each 1p., dated 25 August 1987, 13 November 1987 and 1 January 1988.

Concerning Penny Wock's ... and its author, Cecily Wilson: "Her birthday was in July & mine 10.11.05 ... After World War 2 she married Mr Robert Jelley ... [from] Rhodesia. She toured South Africa with a company putting on plays in different cities ... she went to England and became leading lady in one of London's repertory theatres. She collaborated with the nephew of G.K. Chesterton to write a play Was Solomon Wise? and it was produced in London" (letter of 25 August 1987).

In her letter of 13 November 1987, Jean Maddocks also gives details of the other works she illustrated; in addition, a photograph of her taken about the time she illustrated Penny Wock's ... is enclosed. A Christmas carol, "The Wondrous Story", with words and music by her husband, Edgar Maddocks, and art work by herself, is enclosed with the third letter.
