The adoption of a Code was requested by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to Its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in Case of Illicit Appropriation in 1987 and was considered by the Committee at regular intervals. Approved for adoption by the Committee in 1999 it was endorsed by the UNESCO General Conference in November that year. File contains drafting documents and general correspondence.
