Series. Voices
On a throne exalted, (1954) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
This was the year I joined St. Andrew's Cathedral choir.
Come Sleep, (October 1954) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for four members of the Cathedral choir, who may have sung it in an informal concert.
I wonder as I wander, (1956) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
For the Adelaide Singers conducted by Norman Chinner, who was an encourager, and broadcast by them.
The True Samaritan, (1958) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
I think I showed this to Alan Bellhouse, who conducted the Sydney Madrigal choir with which I sang for a while because I didn't know where else to go. The fordigraphed score would have deterred anyone. The work lay dormant during the 'avant-garde' sixties, but came to mind again in 1976, when I was conducting the Choir of Newcastle Conservatorium for a while, and it seemed worth reviving, as well as revising slightly. I was always looking for unfamiliar poetry to set, and found the two shorter poems in a book of rare verse in the City of Sydney Library, a haunt of Richard Meale's and mine, with an interesting collection of scores as well as poetry and books on religion. It was in the Queen Victoria Building, where a memorable stale smell wafted up from the Wine Cellars in the basement.
Exultate Domino (formerly Psalm 100) (1961 rev. 1997) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
This was the year I first worked in the Religious Department of the ABC, and got to know and be comfortable with Roman Catholics. It was also the year of the first production of the medieval Play of Daniel, in the crypt of St. Mary's Cathedral; I sang as one of four chamberlains, and as the Prophet Habakuk (a four-line solo). Richard Connolly was Daniel, and became a good friend. I sang for a while with his small group, The Julian Singers, which existed mainly to record occasional programmes for Prelude, the 15-minute programme which preceded Plain Christianity at 7.30 every Sunday night on ABC Radio. Sometimes we recorded after dinner at our favourite Spanish restaurant, so eventually the producer, Alan Robson, decided that the quality was too unpredictable.
What shall I render to the Lord?, (1965) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
Written at the request of Judith Stinson, for the first Mass of a new priest, at the Catholic Church in Eastwood.
No man is an island, (September 1977) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
This began with a dream of the Newcastle Conservatorium Choir singing in a circle surrounding the whole seating area for the Cathedral congregation. Something like this would be ideal, but the arrangement eventually arrived at is more practical for most choirs.
Sketches, (c.1978) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
For a projected piece, requested by Dr. Graeme Pont, to be sung by several choirs in boats on Middle Harbour.
Flower in the crannied wall (Easter 1980) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
As soon as I found this poem in the Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse in the early 1960s I wanted to set it, and imagined it as part of a song cycle, with orchestra, for Marilyn Richardson - something that did eventuate in 1994 (The Woven Light). The setting for Trinity College Choir was in response to Peter Dennison's suggestion that I should write a Trinity Sunday motet, as a thank-you for dinners I'd had after Thursday Evensongs at the College, when I was teaching at Melbourne University in the first term of 1979. My brother Harlin, who'd recently become Vicar of St. Andrew's Brighton, in Melbourne, preached the sermon on the occasion of the first performance, beginning: 'The doctrine of the Trinity is as obscure to me as my brother's music… '
There came a Wind like a Bugle, (1987) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by The Song Company, then consisting of eight voices, and conducted by its founder, Charles Colman.
Spring's Ending, (1997) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir, conducted by Stephen Schaeffer.
Towards Autumn, (1998) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by Sydney Children's Choir. Unfortunately my insecurity about being able to write interestingly for SSA alone made me decide to include instrumental support. This diminishes the piece's practicality.
Paradise Unseen, (2001) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
No. 4, Sleep, was written in 1992 at the request of Dick Letts, who asked each composer receiving a Sounds Australian Award that year to write a one-page piece to be sung by the Song Company at the presentation ceremony. It was too short to be included in a concert programme, so Roland Peelman suggested I set a few more of Kathleen Raine's short poems for a 2001 commission. Sleep was very slightly expanded.
Beni Avshalom, (2007) (Item) - Folio-Box 1 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned for the Sydney Chamber Choir, for a concert called When David heard … The printed score was made for me by Chris Williams, whose interest and involvement throughout the composing process was a new sort of experience for me, and very stimulating.
Series. Ensemble
Trio for flute, clarinet and harp, (1956) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for David Cubbin, Kevin Murphy and Huw Jones, members of the South Australian Symphony Orchestra whom I'd got to know. In the performance at a Sunday afternoon concert in the Elder Hall later that year I played the harp part on the piano.
Festive Prelude (also called Diversions) for Brass Quintet, (1958) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Requested by my teacher Raymond Hanson, for performance at a reception for David Oistrakh in the lower Sydney Town Hall, organised by the Anglo-Soviet Friendship Society. After the concert Alfred Hill presented Oistrakh with some tapes of his music… "Yer needn't think the stuff you've heard tonight is representative of Australian music. Some of us aren't afraid to write a choon!!"
Laudes, (1963) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Professor Donald Peart invited me to write a chamber work for performance at the 1964 Adelaide Festival. This was the first time I'd been asked to write a substantial concert work. He agreed to my choice of seven woodwind, brass and stringed instruments, with piano, which seemed to go some way towards the orchestral piece which was what Priaulx Rainier had suggested might be my next project. (I was a bit scared of percussion.) Note: the original manuscript of the hymns Brompton and Camperdown is on the reverse of the last page of Laudes.
Benedixio Domini, (1963) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for a group conducted by David Branagan to play at a special Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral.
String Quartet No. I, (1965) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for the Austral String Quartet.
Serenata Piccola (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
For two recorders, cello and piano (1966) This, and the organ piece on the reverse, were written for the wedding of Martin and Françoise Koschorke.
Mini music, (1969) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Written quickly for players at a music camp I visited briefly.
Voices, (1971) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Comissioned to be recorded by the Adelaide Wind Quintet.
Piece for six flutes, (1972) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Nick Negerevich was an important friend at the time; we gave the probable Australian premiere of Copland's Duo (1971). He asked me to write for a concert in honour of his teacher Victor McMahon.
String Quartet No. II, (1974) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by the Adelaide String Quartet. The first three pages of the printed score were damaged by Hildegard.
Fanfare and Processional, (1977) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by the Convocation of the University of Newcastle, at the suggestion of Brin Newton-John.
Nocturne for four double basses, (1978) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by Rodney Slatford, this was difficult to write and seemed not very satisfactory. A conductor is probably needed, and the piece has been tried, but not performed as far as I know.
Trio for clarinet, cello and piano, (1979) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by the Detlev Deubach Trio.
String Quartet No. III, (1980) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by Musica Viva for a workshop performance.
The wind stirs gently, (1992) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Requested by Alan Holley for a concert in the foyer of Sydney Town Hall in honour of Dulcie Holland's 80th birthday. I had known her since my schooldays, and about that time she kindly played the orchestral reduction of a MozartConcerto when I was encouraged by my teacher Frank Warbrick to enter the ABC Concerto and Vocal Competition.
String Quartet No. IV, (1995) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by Musica Viva for the Goldner Quartet, at the instigation of David Barmby.
Bagatelle for string quartet, (2001) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
I was asked unexpectedly to write a bright one-minute piece for an unspecified group of instruments to be chosen from string quartet and piano trio (for an unexpectedly good fee). This interested me, so in two or three days I wrote something for two violins and viola, thinking of Dvorak's Terzetto, and thought I might later add two more short pieces. However it turned out that the letter had been ambiguous, so I had to add a cello part, in which I wasn't interested. As far as I know the piece has never been played.
Figments, (2003) (Item) - Folio-Box 2 (MS Acc09.081)
Requested by Graham Ashton for his ensemble in New York. Plans for a commission and for assistance with copying came to nothing, but the work was completed anyway.
Series. Voices with organ or piano
Hymn tune, (c.1947) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Harmonised by a Conservatorium teacher, Edwin J. Robinson, who was a friend of Miss Freda Claydon, organist at St. John's Church Beecroft where I sang in the choir.
Song of Pride, (1959) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for a competition; John Wheeler, who was adept at this sort of thing, kindly wrote the words for me.
Who build on hope (formerly Anthem for a Dedication), (1960) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
For the dedication service held on completion of the new tower and spire at St. Alban's Epping, where I was choirmaster.
Missa Sancti Albani, (1961) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for use at St. Alban's Epping.
Mass for choir and organ, (1962) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Started in Sydney and continued in London, just as the Second Vatican Council was meeting; soon there would be no need for a new Latin Mass. It was intended for Fr. Harden and the choir of St. Mary's Cathedral, where in 1961 I had taken part in The Play of Daniel.
2 hymn tunes (1963), one psalm chant (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
The hymn tunes were written after my return from Europe, for inclusion in The Living Parish Hymn Book, pub.1964. The original manuscript is on the reverse of the last page of Laudes. One of several psalm chants written about that time is attached.
Hymn tune, Beecroft, (2007) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by St. John's Anglican Church, Beecroft, on the initiative of Catherine Bartho, to mark the Centenary of the current church building. Quite unexpectedly the tune had come into my mind some months earlier, after hearing Vaughan Williams' Sine Nomine on the radio. The organist would have preferred his own harmonisation, but the choir and congregation sang the hymn enthusiastically. The words were written by Maryanne Sansom. The music was "Dedicated to Richard Connolly on his eightieth birthday."
Series. Solo voice(s) alone or with one instrument
Nunc Dimittis, (1953) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
written for Pam Backhouse, who lived locally, and Doug Spooner, a great enthusiast for English church music who got me interested in the possibility of singing in St. Andrew's Cathedral choir. They married about that time. Pam was a pupil of the soprano Elsie Finlay, and through her I had the useful experience of accompanying several singers (and being dragged round to Eisteddfods).
Child in Nature (Robin Gurr), (1957) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Robin was one of the sopranos I accompanied, also talented as a painter.
Joseph and Mary, (1959) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for Marilyn and Peter Richardson, with whom I had taken part, the previous year, in the first Australian performance of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, conducted by Richard Meale.
Christus Petra (formerly Song of Christ the Rock), (1962) (Item) - Folio-Box 3 (MS Acc09.081)
Written when I was working with Priaulx Rainier. I found the Shaker poem in the local Chiswick Library.
Series. Keyboard
Preludes I and II, (1952) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
I played these in an ABC Young Australia broadcast the following year.
Prelude, Canzona and Chorale for organ, (1954) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
I enjoyed playing the Prelude, Choral and Fugue by Cesar Franck.
Toccata for Piano Duet, (1955) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Included in an ABC broadcast with my teacher, Frank Warbrick.
Toccata, Arioso, (1960) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Both written in January, but separate pieces.
Comment on a Popular Song, (1960) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Dulcie Holland was organising a concert for Cammeray Music Club, and asked me to write a variation on a theme she would send me; when it arrived it was not an original theme, as I'd hoped, but just Click go the Shears, which I've always found rather irritating. I was aware of the 'Angry Young Men' involved in British theatre at the time and thought I'd emulate them. The other variations were by Dulcie and Miriam Hyde. Later I showed the piece to Priaulx Rainier, and she suggested the octave displacement.
Easter Fanfare, (1961) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Written as opening and closing music for a half-hour programme of music and poetry which I devised and produced while working in the ABC Religious Department. Norman Johnston played the organ and conducted his Oriana Singers.
Organ piece, (1966) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Unfinished - in Ensemble file, with Serenata Piccola.
Essay for Piano, (1962) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Written when I was working with Priaulx Rainier; slightly revised in 1985, and renamed Grevillia.
Sonorities, (1968) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Written at the request of John Gordon, the Sydney University carrillonist.
Fanfare, (1979) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Richard Meale invited me to write this for the opening recital on the new organ at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
Uttering Joyous Leaves, (1981) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Written at short notice for the Sydney International Piano Competition, after Richard Meale had withdrawn.
Circle Citadels, (1989) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Written to contrast with the two Fanfares which David Kinsela wanted to include in an album of organ music he was editing for Currency Press. At his suggestion the Easter Fanfare was renamed Fanfare for a Ceremony, and the later one, Westerly Prelude.
Series. Solo Instrument, alone or with keyboard
Rondo (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
For bassoon and piano (1956) This started as a trombone piece.
Soliloquy for solo cello, (1957) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for Gregory Elmaloglou, with whom I was fortunate to play the Beethoven Sonata Op. 102, No.5, the two Brahms Sonatas and the Shostakovich. Ian Farr wrote his Sonata for us, and we recorded it for the ABC.
Sonatina for oboe and piano, (1959) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for Ian Wilson, who pointed out the ungainly writing in the lower register.
The White-throated Warbler for sopranino recorder and harpsichord, (1965) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Conversation Pieces for flute and piano, (1981) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by John Carmody for his daughter Kathleen and son Sean, and premiered by them at a concert given for members of the Music Teachers Association of NSW.
Forest I for viola and piano, (1990) (Item) - Folio-Box 4 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned for Simon Oswell, whom I had accompanied over several years. He was always very supportive, and more confident in my piano playing than I was. He continued to play the work in the United States as well as Australia.
Series. Solo voice and instrumental ensemble
Carmina, for medium voice and wind quintet (1968 revised 1990) (Item) - Folio-Box 5 (MS Acc09.081)
Written for Lauris Elms and the Sydney Wind Quintet. Lauris gave equally excellent and committed first performances of the original version and of the revision. I chose four Latin poems, feeling unable to write a lyrical vocal line forEnglish words, that would be consistent with the style of my instrumental writing at the time. Looking back from 1990, some of the dissonances seemed awkward and unnecessary. Also included is a rough sketch of my arrangements of three Elizabethan Lute-songs, which Lauris requested to go with a performance of Carmina which she and the Sydney Wind Quintet gave for the Beecroft District Music Club.
Sometimes with One I Love (Item) - Folio-Box 5 (MS Acc09.081)
(Walt Whitman), for soprano, baritone, speaker, flute, clarinet, horn, two cellos and piano (1976) Patrick White hadasked why I wanted to set 'that old windbag' but he was keen to hear the result, and when the projected Sydney performance was threatened with cancellation he paid for it.
The Owl (James McDonald), for soprano, flute, clarinet, violin/viola, cello, piano and percussion, (1983) (Item) - Folio-Box 5 (MS Acc09.081)
Stuart Challender, then artistic director of The Seymour Group, asked me to write a work for Joan Carden; she had recently returned to Australia, and he felt she should be heard here in contemporary repertoire. Joan Carden premiered The Owl in 1983, in a semi-staged performance with The Seymour Group and Stuart Challender, and sang it in 2001 with members of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra conducted by Simone Young.
Series. Orchestra
Canticle of David, (1959) (Item) - Folio-Box 6 (MS Acc09.081)
String orchestra; Ernest Llewellyn kindly included the work in a studio broadcast.
Canticle of the Sun, (1965) (Item) - Folio-Box 6 (MS Acc09.081)
Not a successful piece, being inappropriate to both a combined youth orchestra and to the title. But when I saw a new painting of the same title by John Coburn I knew that was what I wanted to call the piece. As the painting I'dseen was unavailable the generous artist made me a smaller version, which was exhibited at the concert.
Interaction - Music and Painting, (1967) (Item) - Folio-Box 6 (MS Acc09.081)
Devised for a Sydney Prom concert with the painter John Peart. The concept was later developed into a film for television.

Explorations for Piano and Orchestra, (1970) (Item) - Folio-Box 6 (MS Acc09.081)
Commissioned by the Captain Cook BiCentenary Celebrations Citizens Committee, who'd expected something ratherdifferent. I didn't feel ready to write a large purely orchestral piece so soon after Traherne, and eventually it was agreed that Ian Farr, whom I'd had in mind from the outset, should be soloist.
Violin Concerto, (1970) (Item) - Folio-Box 6 (MS Acc09.081)
This was commissioned for the violinist Andre Gertler, who had hoped to premiere it in a future Austrlian tour for the ABC. He lost interest when this didn't eventuate, and felt that the work was not soloistic enough.
The Snow Queen (or The Desolate Kingdom, (1971) (Item) - Folio-Box 6 (MS Acc09.081)
The opening pages and sketches for an opera, with libretto by John Frow, which was to be commissioned by The Australian Opera.

Commissioned for the Melbourne Festival of Youth Orchestras, 1972, and later adapted for performance in the Sydney Prom Concerts.
First Day Covers, (1972) (Item) - Folio-Box 7 (MS Acc09.081)
For speaker (Dame Edna Everage) and orchestra; a collaboration with Barry Humphries initiated by John Hopkins for the Sydney Prom Concerts and later performed in Melbourne and Adelaide. Alan Ginsberg was at the Adelaide performance andtold Geoffrey Dutton he found it incomprehensible, 'like something from another world'.
Fire in the heavens, (1973) (Item) - Folio-Box 7 (MS Acc09.081)
Premiered in the new Sydney Opera House by the Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Laurin Maazel.

Indian Ocean Expedition, (1963) (Item) - Folio-Box 9 (MS Acc09.081)
Film score for Commonwealth Film Unit
In the Head the Fire, (1966) (Item) - Folio-Box 13 (MS Acc09.081)
In separate box: Radiophonic work for voices and instruments, written and produced at the invitation of John Hopkins, who conducted the music. Awarded the Italia Prize, 1966. My colleague Patrick Kirkward, in the Religious Department of the ABC, suggested the Dead Sea Scolls.

Music for radio feature produced by Mungo MacCallum.

Performing version of the medieval music drama, based on the manuscript score by Dr. W. L. Smolden. The production was staged in the crypt of St. Mary's Cathedral following the extremely successful seasons of The Play of Daniel in 1961 and 1962. I took part in both productions.
