ENGLISH TENOR IS  

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE  

The distinguished tenor Gerald English, who toured  

Australia for the ABC in 1973, is the first Visiting Fellow  

■in the Department of Music.  

Mr English will be artist-in-residence until October, during  

which time he will take an active part in the Department  

teaching program.  

He will also give solo recitals on and off the campus;  

conduct weekend seminars on voice training for choirs,  

and on baroque vocal interpretations, and take leading  

roles in UNSW Opera productions.  

His experience in vocal chamber music will lend strength to  

the Grainger Consort, vocal group formed around him.  

The Consort will perform at the Opera House and at the  

Universities of New South Wales and Sydney, it will give  

concerts for Musica Viva in Adelaide and Melbourne.  

Mr English's first appearance on the Kensington campus  

was in the solo tenor part in Exiles, new music-theatre  

work by the young Australian composer Alison Bauld.  

His recital debut as Visiting Fellow in Music will be in the  

Sir John Clancy Auditorium on 22 May at 8.15 pm, when  

he will be accompanied by chamber orchestra.  

He has special feeling for contemporary music for voice,  

and composers Humphrey Searle, Phyllis Tate and lain  

Hamilton have all written works specially for him. Hans  

Werner Henze js writing part for him in new opera  

Privates and Generals, which will have its first performance  

next year at Covent Garden.  

Gerald English is particularly praised for his performance  

of the music of Benjamin Britten. He has sung the solo  

tenor part in Britten's War Requiem 25 times around the  

world and has performed the composer's Serenade and  

Les Illuminations almost as often.  

In 1970 he premiered Sir Michael Tippett's song cycle  

Songs for Dov and in January this year sang it at special  

concert for Tippett's 70th birthday.  

He has won high praise for his many records, including the  

Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of // Prigioniero by  

Dallapiccola. His most recent recordings have included  

works by Berio for RCA and contributions to the Decca  

complete edition of the music of Schoenberg.  

Gerald English's teaching experience includes 13 years with  

the Royal College of Music, London, and special sessions  

with choral scholars at New College, Oxford.
