UNIKEN

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

No. 10 of 1975

July 20 July

$188.9M TRIENNIUM RECOMMENDATION

In its Sixth Report, released in June, the Universities

Commission recommended that the University receive

the following grants durihg the next triennium:

The grants recommended _still require the approval of the

Australian Government, which also has before it the finan-

cial recommendations of the other three education

commissions. The Universities Commission recommendat-

ions for the present 18 universities and Deakin University,

to be established in Geelong in the next triennium, add up

to total of $1,780,817,000. This is an increase of

$476,933,000 over the previous triennium, and compares

with the total recommendations of the Commission on

Advanced Education of $1,681,875,000 for 85 colleges.

While it is anticipated that the recommendations of the

UC and CAE will be considered individually by the

government in its 1975/6 budget planning, the grants

actually approved will be amalgamated on the implemen-

tation of the merger between the two bodies already

foreshadowed by the Prime Minister.

The schools Commission has recommended that

$2,070,000,000 be spent by the Australian Government

in 1976-78, and the Committee on Technical arid Further

Education $493,248,000 for the 2Vi years from July

1976 to 31 December 1978 (this period will bring all

education commissions into triennial synchronisation.

STUDENT NUMBERS

In considering the participation rates for tertiary education,

it has observed that there has been noticeable drop in the

demand for tertiary education, particularly university

education, in number of overseas countries with similar

education systems, and therefore sees need for some

caution in assessing likely trends in undergraduate particip-

ation rates. The UC believes that by 1990 the ratio of

tertiary students to the 17-22-year-old population will be

about 23% for Australia as whole. The UC also believes

there are arguments for adopting firm limits on the size of

the large, well-established universities, including UNSW. In

general, the arguments against further growth relate to the

size of the total student body and not only to undergradu-

ates, i.e. expansion in higher degree enrolments can be

achieved only through reduction in undergraduate enrol-

ments.

The UC's figures for UNSW enrolments, actual for 1973-

75 and estimated for 1976-78 are:

Excluding Teaching Hospitals and Residences

Includes earmarked grants for Australian Graduate School
