Fix this textFood Technology
Fix this textgains school status
Fix this text"We sink or swim on our own now and that is a good
Fix this textposition to be in," says Professor Ron Edwards, Head of
Fix this textthe new School of Food Technology. The School's status
Fix this textwas approved by Council at its last meeting.
Fix this textHowever, Professor Edwards was at pains to point out
Fix this textthat Food Technology's newly acquired standing as a
Fix this textseparate School within the Faculty of Applied Science
Fix this textwould make no difference to the joint programs and
Fix this textaffiliations which the former Department had developed
Fix this textwith the other Schools. This applies especially to the
Fix this textSchool of Chemical Engineering, of which the new School
Fix this texthad formerly been a department.
Fix this textTeaching and research in food technology have enjoyed
Fix this texta long history in the University.
Fix this textIndeed, their beginnings pre-date the establishment of the
Fix this textUniversity by a couple of years because they were first
Fix this textintroduced as a diploma course in the Sydney Technical
Fix this textCollege in 1947, when it was the first course of its kind
Fix this textin Australia and, most probably, the British
Fix this textCommonwealth.
Fix this textIt began under the wing of chemical engineering at the
Fix this textTechnical College and there it remained when the
Fix this textUniversity was established in 1949. it then had orly one
Fix this textstaff member Dr F.H. Reuter, Foundation Head of
Fix this textthe Department. Now it has a total of 17 staff members
Fix this text(academic, secretarial and support) as well as two research
Fix this textassistants funded from outside sources.
Fix this textThe increase in staff members has been made necessary
Fix this textby the rise in student numbers and the growing research
Fix this textactivities in the School. About 140 first degree students
Fix this texthave-passed through the School. Eighty students most of
Fix this textthem from South East Asia - have obtained graduate
Fix this textdiplomas, while 35 have gained the degrees of Master
Fix this textor Doctor of Philosophy.
Fix this textThere are now about 140 undergraduate students
Fix this textenrolled in the School plus 50 graduate students, making
Fix this textFood Technology the second biggest school in the Faculty
Fix this textof Applied Science.
Fix this textThe work done for higher degrees is one of the factors
Fix this textwhich distinguishes the School of Food Technology at
Fix this textUNSW from departments in the same subject at colleges
Fix this textof advanced education and technical colleges.
Fix this text"The CAEs and technical colleges are more involved in
Fix this texthow things are done," says Professor Edwards. "We are
Fix this textmore concerned with why things are done."
Fix this text"We give the students a training in basic science and
Fix this textonly then do we teach them how to apply that training
Fix this textin food technology. The result is a graduate who has
Fix this textintellectual capital on which he can build. This is
Fix this textimportant if he is going to adapt to inevitable future
Fix this textchanges in the industry."
Fix this textConsumers largely have School researchers to thank for
Fix this textpreserving the quality of Georges River oysters from the
Fix this texteffects of pollution and for improved techniques in
Fix this textbrewing and the wine industry. One project is helping
Fix this textbee-keepers to produce honey that meets overseas
Fix this textexport standards.
Fix this textAs Professor Edwards says, "We want our research to be
Fix this texthelpful to the food industry and to the consumer."
Fix this textThe staff have acted as consultants to the Food and
Fix this textAgriculture Organisation of the United Nations, the
Fix this textAustralian Vice-Chancellors' Committee, the Australian
Fix this textAcademy of Science and the Australian and State
Fix this textGovernments.
Fix this textUntil the recent drop in job opportunities there were
Fix this textmany more positions available than there were food
Fix this texttechnologists graduating. "Even now the opportunities
Fix this textfor graduates in food technology are at least as good as
Fix this textthey are in any other branch of applied science," says
Fix this textProfessor Edwards.

Fix this textA SPECIAL WELCOME
Fix this textTO NEW STUDENTS
Fix this text1 "Work hard" advised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rupert Myers, in his speech of
Fix this textwelcome to new students during Orientation Week. The Vice-Chancellor suggested
Fix this textthat students aim high and begin to consider study at the honours level from the
Fix this textvery beginning.
Fix this textIn comparing the 1976 intake with previous years. Professor Myers later told
Fix this textUNIKEN that he had been impressed by the number of students who had expressed
Fix this textinterest directly to him about undertaking higher level studies. He also rioted the
Fix this textI "intense enthusiasm and interest of the mature age entry students" (see UNIKEN
Fix this text1/76). Professor Myers believes that these older students will have a considerable
Fix this text■impact on the student population of the University as'a whole.
Fix this textnew students arriving on campus for Orientation Week, which began on 23
Fix this text; February were greeted by a busy program which gave them a good idea of all of the
Fix this textavailable organisations and activities. A colourful stall area was set up west of the
Fix this textApplied Science Building for clubs and sporting organisations to tell about their
Fix this textactivities and sign up new members. Almost every sporting group was represented,
Fix this textas well as political clubs and school societies.
Fix this textOne of the most popular tables was the UNSW Norman Gunston Fan Club which
Fix this textattracted several hundred new members by the end of the week. The Vice-Chancellor
Fix this textreceived a membership card as did the State Opposition Leader, Mr Neville Wran,
Fix this textwho came to the University to take part in a Students' Union forum on responsible
Fix this textgovernment. Mr Wran walked through the stall area before the forum began and
Fix this textchatted with students.
Fix this textMany of the schools provided special welcomes to their own students, often complete
Fix this textwith a barbecue or wine and cheese. Medical students were welcomed by the Chairman
Fix this textof the Faculty, Professor Bob Pitney, and were given a tour of the medical buildings.
Fix this textNew Engineering students met separately with their individual Schools at staff-
Fix this textstudents meetings and then came together for a "Freshers Welcome" by the Dean of
Fix this textthe Faculty, Professor Tom Fink.
Fix this textWhen their feet were tired many students took the opportunity tp,become acquainted
Fix this textwith Opunka, the campus film group which ran a full schedule of films throughout
Fix this textthe week. Highlight of the showings was a double bill of'Chinatown'-and "Janis."
Fix this textNo matter what their taste in music activities students could enjoy the sounds of a
Fix this textreally funky jazz rock group called the "Currents" or listen to sweet jazz with the
Fix this textHarbour City Jazz Band. For those who wanted to make their own music the
Fix this textUniversity chorus Unichant and the Musical Society, which was auditioning for a
Fix this textproduction of Gilbert and SullivanV'lolanthe' invited new students to join them.
Fix this textFor many new students the Orientation Week activity was sometimes ignored while
Fix this textthey took time out to sit on the grass in the sun. They could listen to someone
Fix this textplaying a guitar while they got acquainted with other students, both old and new.
Fix this textThe start of classes the following week seemed far away.
