Fix this textREORIENTATION
Fix this textIN SCIENCE
Fix this textAND MATHS
Fix this textA series of major and innovative changes in the structure
Fix this textof the University's Science and Mathematics Course will
Fix this textbe instituted in 1977. These have arisen from one of the
Fix this textmost comprehensive re-examinations of the aims of tertiary
Fix this textscience and mathematics education ever undertaken in
Fix this textAustralia.
Fix this textA wide choice of programs will be introduced to meet
Fix this textspecific aims and objectives. The proposals, originating
Fix this textfrom the Board of Studies in Science and Mathematics
Fix this textand endorsed by the Professorial Board, were approved
Fix this textby Council at its September meeting.
Fix this textThe main aims of the Science and Mathematics Course,
Fix this textdiverse and not necessarily exclusive, may be summarised
Fix this textas providing opportunities for students to prepare them-
Fix this textselves for careers in:
Fix this text• research
Fix this text• technology
Fix this text• science and mathematics education
Fix this text• areas of management or public policy involving the
Fix this textuse of science or mathematics
Fix this textCHOICE OF PROGRAMS
Fix this textThe inclusion of the last aim will give some programs in
Fix this textUNSW's Science and Mathematics Course a distinctive and
Fix this textunique character. However, many programs will retain the
Fix this textpresent 3- and 4-year degree concept in which there may
Fix this textbe strong concentration on professional training in one of
Fix this texta number of possible disciplines. Some programs, too,
Fix this textnow have an emphasis to help graduates fit into the work-
Fix this textforce. The existing activities supervised by the Board since
Fix this textits establishment in 1973 will still be carried on.
Fix this textThe Chairman of the Board of Studies in Science and
Fix this textMathematics, Professor Ray Golding, says, "several
Fix this textinnovative features in the structure of choices available
Fix this textwill bring, as steadily introduced, a new range of choices
Fix this textand a significantly more flexible approach to the study of
Fix this textscience and mathematics in the University".
Fix this textThese features include professional courses, multi-
Fix this textdisciplinary courses and Science/Education and
Fix this textMathematics/Education courses. Among the nine general
Fix this textobjectives spelled out for the Science and Mathematics
Fix this textCourse, there is an emphasis on encouraging students to
Fix this textdevelop interest, curiosity, creative imagination, specula-
Fix this texttion and communication skills as well as knowledge and
Fix this textunderstanding of science and mathematics. Not so long
Fix this textago, the last two characteristics of science and mathem-
Fix this textatics education would have swamped the rest.
Fix this textSCIENCE AND SOCIETY
Fix this textThe Board's desire also to establish Liberal Studies in
Fix this textScience has found expression in a new Master of Science
Fix this textand Society course, which will be administered by the
Fix this textFaculty of Science. This degree (MScSoc), the first of its
Fix this textkind in Australia, will be obtained through two years of
Fix this textpart-time study in formal course work. It will start in 1977.
Fix this textINTEGRATION
Fix this textThe Science and Mathematics Course will now be
Fix this textstructured in such a way as to integrate into viable
Fix this textprograms the wide variety of units within the Course as
Fix this textwell as selected units from the Arts Course and courses in
Fix this textthe Faculties of Applied Science and Engineering.
Fix this textSpecific programs will be selected where each has its own
Fix this textspecial objectives. There will not be a random selection
Fix this textof subjects available to students. Professor Golding says
Fix this text"The new scheme will help students to identify themselves
Fix this textwith a particular discipline and with a particular School
Fix this text(in the case of a professionally oriented selection of units)
Fix this textor with a group of academics (in the case of multi-
Fix this textdisciplinary courses)."
Fix this textmulti-disciplinary courses
Fix this textThese will form one of the special features of the new
Fix this textarrangements. The Board of Studies in Science and
Fix this textMathematics has surveyed its members for their views
Fix this texton designing professional multi-disciplinary programs, and
Fix this textis setting up small groups to administer them. The
Fix this textmembers of these groups are drawn from existing staff of
Fix this textthe Schools.
Fix this textThus, multi-disciplinary programs are being introduced by
Fix this textdrawing on present resources of the University without
Fix this textcreating separate units within the academic structure. This
Fix this textapproach provides a guarantee of continuity of each new
Fix this textmulti-disciplinary program which might otherwise have
Fix this textbeen hard to establish in times of no-growth in the
Fix this textUniversity budget. This is illustrated by the following
Fix this textexample.
Fix this textMARINE SCIENCE PROGRAM
Fix this textAs part of its new approach to science education, UNSW
Fix this textis introducing in 1977 an undergraduate program in
Fix this textMarine Science. This is believed to be the first specialist
Fix this textcourse of its kind in Australia.
Fix this textBecause Marine Science encompasses a wide diversity of
Fix this textsubjects, the planned programs will provide students with
Fix this textan opportunity to specialize in selected areas yet ensure
Fix this textthat they receive adequate training in the broader aspects
Fix this textof Marine Science.
Fix this textTo achieve these aims, programs will be available in the
Fix this textfollowing areas: Physical Oceanography, Biological
Fix this textOceanography, Earth Science Oceanography and Environ-
Fix this textmental Chemistry. Students enrolled in each program will
Fix this textalso be expected to select two of the Physical, Biological,
Fix this textEarth Science and Chemical minor sequences offered.
Fix this textThe Chairman of the Standing Committee administering
Fix this textthe Marine Science Program, Professor Kevin Marshall,
Fix this textSchool of Microbiology, says that in order to manage and
Fix this textpreserve Australia's unique and extensive marine resources,
Fix this textthe tempo of research into Marine Science must be
Fix this textincreased. He is confident of good career prospects for
Fix this textgraduates of the new course - e.g. in the new Australian
Fix this textInstitute of Marine Science at Townsville, in CSIRO, in
Fix this textFederal and State Government and industry.
Fix this textUNSW has sponsored many valuable research projects in
Fix this textMarine Science. For example, the members of the Standing
Fix this textCommittee, drawn from 9 different Schools, are expert
Fix this textin such diverse but inter-related fields as microbial ecology
Fix this textas applied to marine pollution, tides and wave motion,
Fix this textmolluscs and mussel farming, heavy metal accumulation in
Fix this textalgae, environmental chemistry and geomorphology of the
Fix this textseabed.
Fix this textOTHER SCIENCE DEGREE COURSES
Fix this textCouncil has also approved, for introduction in 1977 a
Fix this textnumber of other important innovations in science and
Fix this textmathematics;
Fix this text• New combined courses in Science/Education and
Fix this textMathematics/Education leading to the qualification
Fix this textof BSc Dip Ed. (This replaces the Bachelor of Science
Fix this text(Education) course).
Fix this text• New Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree course in
Fix this textMathematics of Management.
Fix this text• New Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree course in
Fix this textApplied Mathematics (Economic Optimization).
Fix this textCHANGESIN COURSES IN OTHER FACULTIES
Fix this text• A revised Bachelor of Engineering degree course in
Fix this textMining Engineering has been approved for 1977.
Fix this text• A new degree of Master of General Studies (MGenStud)
Fix this textwill be offered in the Department of General Studies
Fix this textin 1977. This new course includes a requirement for
Fix this texta project entailing a minimum of six hours per week
Fix this textover two years.
Fix this textIn future issues of UNIKEN, essential details will be
Fix this textannounced for some of these new science, mathematics
Fix this textand other courses, most of which are unique to UNSW.
Fix this textFull details of all courses of the University will be
Fix this textpublished in the Faculty Handbooks for 1977 and in the
Fix this textbrochures for particular courses and subjects published
Fix this textby some Schools.
