THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

$1,066 mil.

FROM ARGC

Details inside

No. 19 of 1976

15-28 November

SEN. CARRICK ON CAMPUS

The Commonwealth Minister for Education, Senator John

Carrick, made visit to the University on 28 October.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rupert Myers, provided

the following account of the Minister's visit for UNI KEN.

“After being welcomed to the University, Senator Carrick

had morning tea with the President of the Students'

Union, Ms Anne Fitzpatrick, the President-elect, Mr Paul

Mulroney, and the Education Vice-President-elect,

Mr Mitchell O'Toole.

"In response to queries from the students, the Minister

said that regulations spelling out details relating to the

recently announced revisions to the Tertiary Education

Assistance Scheme would be announced within few

weeks. He also offered to meet the Students' Union

President at any mutually convenient time to discuss

problems which students might be experiencing.

"After morning tea. Senator Carrick made walking tour

of the campus. The Minister showed special interest in the

very substantial element of self-help the University had

shown in its attack on the car parking problem.

"He was particularly impressed with the multi storey car

park which the University has erected and with the fact

that another two floors are being added, work having

begun on the morning of his visit.

"I raised with Senator Carrick the concern that the

University was feeling over the supplementation of

recurrent grants to meet wage and materials cost increases.

The Minister said he expected to make statement on this

matter shortly.

"Among other matters discussed with senior colleagues

and me were the role of universities and the changes likely

to occur as result of technological developments in

communication, Senator Carrick having seen something of

the aids available in places liT<e~the Library to assist

students with their learning.

"The visit of the Minister passed off without incident".

ENGINEERING THE

BODY

The University has established Centre for Biomedical

Engineering for inter-disciplinary studiesand developments

involving the Faculties of Engineering, Medicine, Biological

Sciences and Applied Science.

The Centre's Co-ordinator, Mr Peter Bason, Senior

Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, says that the Centre is

associated with considerable amount of biomedical

engineering work in the University.

It is also link between campus facilities and expertise,

and research in the University's teaching and associated

hospitals. Work in the orthopaedic, cardiovascular, renal

and neuromuscular areas is benefitting from this

collaboration.

Mr Bason says that the Centre can collect and disseminate

information, facilitate meetings between researchers in

different disciplines, initiate or collaborate in research or

development programs and generally help where necessary.

Planning is well advanced for two-year, full-time post-

graduate course in the Faculty of Engineering leading to

the degree of Master of Biomedical Engineering. The

proposal is expected to go to Professorial Board and

Council in 1977. If approved, it may be possible to take

the first students in 1978.

The Centre is also co-operating in the organisation of

major conference to be held in the University next August

at which representatives from around Australia will meet

to establish an authority to plan and co-ordinate rehabilit-

ation engineering activity throughout the country.

The Centre has existed on an informal basis since August

1974 butonly received formal assent in September this year.

The Mechanical Engineering extension houses temporary

office and laboratories for the Centre, as well as resource

centre comprising collection of relevant theses, books,

articles and other publications.

The Chairman of the Centre's Management Committee,

Professor Noel Svensson, in report on Centre activities,

says that it intends to develop laboratories for specific

studies involving patients undergoing treatment. These

laboratories would complement existing University

facilities. Other laboratories would be developed in the

University's teaching hospitals, bringing about closer

link between biomedical engineering and the clinical

aspects of patient care.

major project already undertaken under the auspices of

the Centre is the design of total hip joint prostheses (see

UNIKEN 7/76). To ascertain the principles that must be

observed in the design and implementation of the

prosthesis, studies have been made of stress distribution in

the femur. similar study of stress in the pelvis is also

under way.

biomedical engineering group within the School of

Chemical Engineering is primarily concerned with the

optimal long-term replacement of kidney function.

In the School of Electrical Engineering the Centre has

been involved in both basic and applied medical research.

Completed projects include number of electronic devices

to assist in medical applications. Current investigations

include the control of the heart rate by external stimuli

and the development of model which predicts normal

and anomalous beating of the heart.
