No.

25 April May

TRACING

ANCIENT

RIVERS

study conducted by two scientists from the School of

Applied Geology, Dr Alberto Albani and Dr Peter

Rickwood, along with Dr David Johnson and Mr Jim

Tayton of Macquarie University's School of Earth Sciences,

has traced the ancient river systems of the Botany Bay

area.

Sutherland Shire Council, worried about the state of

beaches at Cronulla, asked Unisearch, the University's

research and development company, to conduct an

overall scientific study of Bate Bay, Botany Bay, Kurnell

Peninsula and Port Hacking. The four geologists were

asked to conduct the study for Unisearch.

Throughout 1975 the bedrock of Botany Bay was

investigated by using continuous seismic profiling

system called "sparker", an electrical device which

generates sparks of short duration in the seawater. The

sparks cause water vapour bubbles to form and as the

bubbles impjode, they generate the essential sound waves.

The reflected sound waves are detected by an array of

hydrophones and fed to chart recorder. Both the

sparking unit and hydrophones are towed behind

research vessel. The particular frequency used is able to

penetrate the sediment so that the charts trace both the

bottom and the bedrock. The research vessel criss-crossed

Botany Bay for over 250 km to track the river valleys of

the Bay.

The results of the research published so far show the

Georges River, the Cooks River and several rivers that no

longer exist once flowed to the sea through what is now

Cronulla until silting of the region forced diversion. So

far the river valleys have been traced only to the present

shoreline but Dr Albani says the team would like to trace

the valleys offshore, further out on the continental shelf.

EVENT

77

COMMONWEALTH TO FUND

SOCIAL WELFARE RESEARCH

Applications are currently being received for the position

of Director of the new Social Welfare Research Centre,

which has just been established in the University with

financial support from the Commonwealth Government.

The Centre will operate as unit of the University, possibly

in rent-free building off-campus. The Commonwealth

Government grant of $300,000 year will allow for the

appointment of the Director and will provide research and

support staff, library and computer services and necessary

equipment.

In advertising for Director, the University has called for

person with "an understanding of Australian society and

of the various systems which are likely to affect Australian

social welfare."

The purpose of the proposed Centre will be to:

• undertake and sponsor research on important aspects

of social welfare in Australia;

provide opportunities for postgraduate study of social

welfare;

• arrangeseminarsandconferencestofosterunderstanding

of, and elucidate issues in the field of social welfare;

• arrange for the publication of results of research and

studies carried out in or under the aegis of the Centre.

The main area of study for the Centre will be Australia's

social welfare needs and priorities for the future. This

study will deal particularly with various changes in society

ethnic, economic or occupational, for example

changes in personal and group life-styles that could affect

future needs for social welfare services and the capacity of

the community to pay for them, the administration and

financing of social welfare services, the effectiveness of

social welfare programs (including reviews in the light of

changing needs, social and economic conditions, and

community attitudes and expectations), the co-ordination

of social welfare policies, services and activies,, and the

social welfare aspects of the operation of other programs.

In order to pursue these studies the Centre will undertake

research itself but may let research contracts. It may

also undertake research commissioned by other bodies, as

well as organise conferences and seminars, convene small

study groups to consider and report on special problems,

and establish working group to facilitate co-operation

with schools and departments in the University.

It is expected that the Centre's staff will work with other

bodies in the social welfare field, such as Federal, State

and local government departments and agencies, and

non-government bodies in such way as not to duplicate

or overlap other research activities.

The Minister for Social Security, Senator Margaret

Guilfoyle, has said she will nominate senior officer of

her Department to be Social Welfare Research Centre

Liaison Officer responsible for facilitating access to

Commonwealth Government facilities and information

and for effecting good communication between the

Department of Social Security and other Commonwealth

Departments.

The Director will have the benefit of the advice of

committee and the Centre's work will be planned in

consultation with the advisory committee.

Professor Rex Vowels, as Acting Vice-Chancellor, has said

that the Centre would bring to the University unique

opportunity for research and development in very

important finld.
