wrangle

The Council of the Univer-

sity of NSW has proposed to

the State Minister for Educa-

tion, Dr Terry Metherell,

solution to the current

vvransle over possible

wrangle over possipie

mergers involving UNSW

which it believes should

satisfy both parties.

Council held special meeting

on 16 March to discuss the State

Government draft legislation

which centres on the proposed

restructure of higher education in

NSW. Part of the restructure

involves the University of NSW

being ‘networked’ with the

Mitchell College of Advanced

Education in Bathurst and the

Riverina-Murray Institute of

Higher Education in Wagga.

The University was asked to

respond to the Bill by 21 March.

Members at the special meeting

supported letter prepared by the

University’s Chancellor, Justice

Gordon Samuels, which high-

lighted the fact that both the

University and the State Govern-

ment’s joint purpose could easily

be satisfied. Council endorsed the

Chancellor’s letter for transmission

to Dr Mcthcrell and to the Federal

Minister for Employment, Educa-

tion and Training, Mr Jolm

Dawkins.

Women take

to Mining

Engineering

Most people think it is

dirty, dusty and desolate, so

why would young woman’s

fancy turn to working in

mine?

Five of the 25 students in first

year Mining Engineering at the

University of NSW arc women.

Before enrolling in Mining

Engineering, each analysed the job

opportunities open to her and each

concluded that mining engineering

was most suitable career for

modem woman.

Miss Jo-Anne Dudley, from

Caboollurc in Queensland, worked

for year after leaving school.

“During that year soon learnt

that educational qualifications arc

the fastest way to worthwhile

career,” she said.

“So started analysing job

advertisements in newspapers.

Engineering vacancies lopped the

list and mining engineering ap-

peared to offer the most scope.

“I was unsure where to study

until read that UNSW had been

selected as Key Centre for

Mines.”

Miss Rebecca Scott, of

Frcnchs Forest, acquired
