Chemists study  

new polymers  

Researchers at UNSW’s  

Department of Organic  

Chemistry have been  

awarded Australian Research  

Council funding to develop  

and explore the uses of new  

class of biological and indus-  

trial chemicals.  

Eighty groups of research  

chemists around the world are  

working on developing new  

‘molecular baskets’, called cal-  

ixarenes, derived from the reactions  

of formaldehyde with class of  

organic compounds known as  

phenols.  

Because of the unusual ‘cup’or  

basket shape of calixarenes (calyx  

is Graeco-Latin for cup) and  

weak electric charge that is main-  

tained inside the cup, calixarenes  

have many useful chemical char-  

acteristics such as the ability to  

extract some metals from solution.  

Calixarenes have been used in  

Japan to extract uranium from sea  

water. They can also mimic some  

enzymes.  

The calixarenes in present use  

are an offshoot of the intensive  

research that went into the phenol-  

formaldehyde reactions that have  

produced an impressive list of  

synthetic plastics. The first of these  

was Bakelite, patented in 1908.  

Despite the successes of the  

phenol-aldehyde polymers and  

calixarenes. Professor David  

Black, UNSW’s Professor of Or-  

ganic Chemistry, believes that re-  

search into the phenol-formalde-  

hyde reactions has become limited  

by the restricted number of phenols  

available.  

While doing research into  

metal complex wool dyes some  

years ago. Professor Black moved  

into indole chemistry. Subsequent  

work has led to fundamental  

breakthrough in developing elec-  

tron-rich indoles which display  

high reactivity towards formalde-  

hyde and other aldehydes.  

Indoles have been known for  

long time. One is the basis of  

lysergic acid derivatives, including  

LSD. Another forms the basis of  

serotonin, an important chemical  

that controls biological rhythms in  

the body. These and many other in-  

doles are derived from the essential  

amino-acid, tryptophane.  

The products of the indole-  

aldehyde reactions, which preserve  

their indole structure, are expected,  

by analogy with the formaldehyde-  

phenol products, to have wide  

range of useful properties as poly-  

mers and ‘molecular baskets’.  

Mineral extraction  

Molecular baskets, with their  

ability to mimic enzymes and their  

affinity for certain metals, raise the  

possibility that they could be suit-  

able for mineral extraction, as well  

as host of biological and pharma-  

ceutical uses.  

Basic indoles have maximum  

of seven points in their structure at  

which they could be reactive but  

most reactions occur at only two or  

three points. Professor Black and  

his group have succeeded in ex-  

tending the reactions to more of the  

seven positions.

Mementos frome the Guggenheim  

Visitors to the Guggen-

Art Gallery of New South  

Wales can’t make off with an  

Alexander Calder mobile or  

Delaunay painting, but they  

can take away some avant  

garde jewellery inspired by  

the two artists.  

Lisa Pittar, postgraduate stu-  

dent at UNSW’s College of Fine  

Arts, has worked long hours to  

complete commission offered her  

by the Gallery Bookshop, to pro-  

duce jewellery in the style of any  

two artists whose work is repre-  

sented in the current exhibition.  

“I chose Calder and Delaunay  

for my models,” Lisa told  

UNIKEN.  

Calder uses mainly black in his  

“stabiles” and red and silver for  

his mobiles (mobiles that are fixed  

but with hinged parts) which move  

in prescribed patterns.  

“He prefers organic forms,”  

Lisa said “leaves and petal shapes  

are favourites.”  

She has produced necklace in  

10 different Calderesque shapes,  

two lots of earrings and one stick-  

pin. One set of earrings has petal  

shape and the other leaf shape.  

They are all in flat metal (anodised  

aluminium).  

Robert Delaunay, painter in  

abstract circular shapes, inspired  

her to produce complex disc-  

shaped structure for one set of ear-  

rings made in gold-plated brass.  

She also came up with  

Delaunay inspired neckpiece of 10  

components, along with pendant.  

Lisa is one of several Sydney  

jewellers invited to produce exhi-  

bition memorabilia for the Gallery.  

“We only do this with really  

important exhibitions,” said Clytie  

Blaxland, assistant manager of the  

Gallery Bookshop. She and col-  

league, Gillian Williamson, along  

with the manager, Brian Turner,  

conceived the jewellery scheme as  

more interesting supplement to  

the standard T-shirt and cards  

memorabilia available to patrons.  

“We chose different jewellers  

for the Paris Opera Exhibition,”  

Ms Blaxland said. “But we decided  

it would be good idea to widen  

the range and give other jewellers  

an opportunity to take up the  

challenge.”  

Lisa said; “I was delighted to  

be asked. The time frame was bit  

short, but I’m happy with the result  

and so is the Gallery.”
