FAIR

FEVER

Buyers scavenged

for bargains and

treasures. Professor

Malcolm Chaikin

(right) auctioned

rare books, and

cashiers Mrs Shirley

Marshall (front) and

Mrs Joan Mac-

donald, along with other Committee members and friends, calculated sales to the tune of $45,086 at

the Book Fair held from 24-29 April. The record total, $B,OOO more than the previous Fair, will be

donated by the Committee to enhance the environment of the University.

One reason for the increase was that more books were donated, mostly from people on campus. All

recordings sold quickly and, although stamps were included in the Fair for the first time, they attracted

interest especially from students and, in particular, from Asian students. Professor Chaikin's highest

sale was $2lO for Carlo Thimm's Fencing and Duelling published in London in 1856. But some buyers

bought bonanzas book bought for $1 has since been valued at $3OO and another bought for ten

cents is of the same edition as one (admittedly in better condition) which sold recently for $2501

Professor Robert Walker, School of Accountancy (bottom, left) did not buy either of these but still

looks happy with his purchases.

BEST EVER YEAR

'The past year was high for the UNSW

Sports Association', President Robert Mann

told over 300 members of the University

and guests at the annual Blues Dinner on

14 April.

'On the Australian scene, three UNSW

students were selected in the World

Universiade Games. PhD student Michael

Hill (fencing), electrical engineering

graduate Phillip Cheetham (gymnastics)

and civil engineering student Kevin

Songberg (canoeing) became Australian

champions in their sports. UNSW wins

were recorded in ten Intervarsity contests.

In Sydney Grade Sport, UNSW was

impressive in cricket, rugby, Australian rules

and soccer. These and achievements by the

thirty-five sporting clubs active on campus

made 1977 the best ever year', Mr Mann

said. 'But the most satisfactory achievement

was the commencement of the swimming

pool. This has come about after many years

of work at all levels of the University', he

said.

Mr Mann poi nted out that the major project

of the swimming pool had necessarily

postponed other work such as the

extensions to the gymnasium and the

development of the ovals at Little Bay

which, he said, are crucial to the continued

progress of the Sports Association.

The guest speaker at the Dinner was Mr

Des Renford who has swum the English

Channel eleven times, making him the

world record holder.
