Art and the Maltese connection  

THE winner of the  

$25,000 Travelling  

Art Scholarship for 1994  

plans to use the scholar-  

ship to continue his  

study of characteristics  

of the Australian/Mal-  

tese community.  

John Spiteri, who is in the fi-  

nal year of Master of Art (Paint-  

ing) degree at UNSW’s College of  

Fine Arts, received the award  

from Mr Peter Collins, NSW  

Minister for the Arts, at func-  

tion at the College on August.  

He plans to use the scholar-  

ship to spend year studying  

and researching in the Master  

of Philosophy course offered at  

Goldsmiths College, London.  

Mr Spiteri said he chose Eng-  

land as base for his studies  

because he wants to connect  

the effects of English colonisa-  

tion on Malta and contempo-  

rary Maltese culture. “This  

would enhance my work on the  

current position of Austra-  

lian/Maltese and the particular  

characteristics of this commu-  

nity,” he said.  

“Using England as base will  

allow me to place into perspec-  

tive aspects of English culture  

and how they have ingrained  

themselves into postcolonial  

Maltese and Australian contem-  

porary culture, Malta having  

been under British rule from  

1799 until the 19605.  

“Wherever English colonisa-  

tion has occurred there have  

been particular effects on the  

prevailing culture. English col-  

onisation of Australia and  

Malta has resulted in very dif-  

ferent outcomes on the indige-  

nous people and their culture.”  

Mr Spiteri said that re-  

searching the origins of  

whole range of cultural charac-  

teristics would help him to  

clarify why particular aspects  

of English culture have sur-  

vived in hybrid form within  

Maltese culture.  

“As my work is dealing with  

notions of cultural duality and  

attempts to negotiate position  

where both cultures can co-ex-  

ist, the research would enable  

me to gain greater insight into  

the unique position of the Aus-  

tralian/Maltese and myself,”  

he said.  

“This understanding would  

allow me to articulate more  

clearly the position of cultural  

hybridity in my work.”  

The prestigious Travelling  

Art Scholarship was founded  

in 1900 by the Society of Art-  

ists using subsidy from the  

State Government.  

The scholarships were  

awarded irregularly until 1975  

when they became an annual  

feature of the NSW art calen-  

dar. Since then all but three of  

the scholarships have been  

won by graduates or members  

of the College of Fine Arts.

Space symposium well timed  

Australia spends about $5OO mil-  

lion year on space activity.  

Space activity is no longer an area of  

futuristic possibility. It is significant  

part of our daily lives.  

symposium looking at the range of space  

technologies from spacecraft electronics, re-  

mote sensing and Global Positioning System  

(GPS) navigation to space communications  

and business development will be held at the  

University of New South Wales Roundhouse  

from 5-7 September.  

The theme for the Ninth National Space  

Engineering Symposium is Space Communi-  

cations. In light of recent debates about pro-  

posed telephone systems and the use of  

satellite broadcasting in television, space com-  

munication has become hot political issue.  

The event has been timed to coincide with  

the Third Australian Space Development Con-  

ference from 8-10 September which will be  

held at the Sheraton Wentworth Hotel, bring-  

ing together two events of major significance  

to the space industry.  

Physicists construct,  

study nanostructure  

PHYSICISTS at UNSW  

recently carried out  

the first semiconductor  

nanostructure device ex-  

periments to be per-  

formed in Australia.  

The experiments were per-  

formed at the low temperature  

laboratory attached to the  

National Pulsed Magnet Labo-  

ratory in the School of Physics  

by Dr Richard Taylor, Re-  

search Associate (formerly at  

the Institute for Microstructu-  

ral Sciences, National Re-  

search Council, NRC, of  

Canada, Ottawa), Dr Richard  

Newbury, Senior Lecturer,  

(formerly at the Cavendish  

Laboratory, University of Cam-  

bridge) and Ms Gina Dunford,  

currently completing her doc-  

toral thesis in the School.  

Nanostructures are expected  

to trigger the first real revolution  

in electronics since the solid  

state transistor replaced the vac-  

uum tube in the 1950s. The Aus-  

tralian Research Council (ARC)  

recently recognised the poten-  

tial importance of nanostruc-  

tures to Australian science and  

industry through series of ma-  

jor funding initiatives.  

The UNSW experiments  

were carried out at tempera-  

tures down to 25mK (0.025  

Kelvin above absolute zero) us-  

ing the dilution refrigerator  

and superconducting magnet  

system established by Dr New-  

bury and funded jointly by  

UNSW and the ARC.  

The latest experiment was  

performed in early July. The  

work has already been pre-  

sented at the 1994 Pan-Asian  

Pacific Physics Conference in  

Brisbane and the data are to  

appear in an extensive review  

article in the new Journal of  

Nanotechnology. Other recent  

results have been submitted for  

publication and will be pre-  

sented to the nanostructure  

community at the International  

Conference on Superlattices  

and Microstructures in North  

America in the next fortnight.  

Dr Taylor said the experi-  

ment was successful from the  

viewpoints of physics and of  

engineering. “As well as allow-  

ing an exploration of the novel  

physical phenomena seen at  

these reduced sizes, the experi-  

ment provided valuable feed-  

back regarding technical aspects  

of the device construction.  

“We have shown that the  

electronic conductance of  

these nanostructure devices  

can be affected by geometry-in-  

duced localisation of electron  

waves carrying the current.  

The specific geometry can also  

be used to tune the evolution of  

chaotic electron behaviour in  

nanostructure. This effect is  

now being seen to have impor-  

tant implications for other  

branches of science,” he said.  

Dr Taylor said his work had  

been possible through col-  

laboration with Dr Andy Sa-  

chrajda and Dr Peter Coleridge  

at the NRC of Canada, recog-  

nised as leading facility in  

semiconductor nanostruc-  

tures, where the devices were  

fabricated and where parallel  

program of experiments is un-  

der way. The collaboration is  

funded at UNSW by the ARC  

Small Grants scheme.

“These first results open the  

way for broad and significant  

Australian-Canadian collabo-  

ration,” Dr Newbury said.  

More advanced devices in-  

corporating new sub-micron  

interconnect technique de-  

signed and fabricated by Dr  

Yan Feng and Dr Taylor during  

recent exchange visit to the  

NRC provide an opportunity to  

establish significant lead in  

the field of laterally defined  

semiconductor nanostructure  

elements.  

“Such devices will provide  

the opportunity to use individ-  

ual nanostructures as building  

blocks in nanometre-scale cir-  

cuits the next century’s  

equivalent of present day elec-  

tronic logic.  

“This achievement repre-  

sents major advance as until  

now only single, individual  

nanostructures have been in-  

vestigated, but how nanos-  

tructure interacts with its  

neighbour (for example in cir-  

cuit) has not been addressed,”  

Dr Taylor said.  

These multiple-level nanos-  

tructure devices will be stud-  

ied at UNSW in the immediate  

future.  

The interconnect technique  

was patented by NASA in  

1959, but 35 years of research  

and development have been re-  

quired before it could be real-  

ised in practical nanostructure
