Study to explore neglected

area of labour market

What is the real situation facing

women aged over 45 who have

experienced unemployment and

re-employment in the labour market?

UNSW study over 12 months will ex-

plore this largely neglected area of women

in the marketplace. The study is expected

to begin in July.

Emeritus Professor Sol Encel, an Honorary

Research Associate in the Social Policy

Research Centre, has been awarded grant

of $33,000 to carry out sample study of

women 45 years and over who have

recently experienced unemployment and

re-employment and to identify the role of

formal and informal networks in section

of the labour market.

He will investigate employment practices

relating to recruitment and deployment,

choices and obstacles in employment and

the improvement of women’s status at

work by highlighting job segregation.

The grant has been made available by the

Women’s Grants Program administered by

the former NSW Ministry for the Status

and Advancement of Women.

Professor Encel said that although studies

have been carried out (for example by the

Department of Employment, Education and

Training) on employers’ attitudes to people

over 45, none paid particular attention to

women.

“At one level, age discrimination affects

women at an earlier age than men,” Pro-

fessor Encel said. “For example in

traditional women’s occupations such as

typist and receptionist.”

“Several recent labour market data indi-

cates that women in their fifties find it

easier to obtain part-time employment

than men.”

Professor Encel said he and his co-worker

on the project, Mrs Helen Studencki,

aimed to collect at least 100 case histories,

and interviews will be carried out with

employers as well as employees.

The study will be concerned not only

with success or failure in finding employ-

ment, but also with workplace experience

following re-employment.

Professor Encel’s last book, Out of the

Doll’s House, contained detailed

analysis of female participation in the

workforce. Since that book was published

in 1991 he has spent much of his time on

research and policy advice on matters

connected with ageing.

Premier position

for alumnus

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Niland,

has sent his congratulations to an “old boy”

of UNSW who has recently been in the

news Mr Bob Carr.

The newly-elected Premier of NSW com-

pleted his Bachelor of Arts degree with

Honours at UNSW, majoring in Labor

history.

Mr Carr had been the NSW Opposition

leader from 1988 to 1995.
