• UNSW ‘goes green’ in

act of community spirit

Australian artists on show at first

UNSW acquisitions exhibition

selection of 50 art works, on

themes ranging from the envi-

ronment, medical and scientific

exploration, through to politics, music and

theatre, are being displayed in the first

UNSW acquisitions exhibition at the College

of Fine Arts’ Ivan Dougherty Gallery.

The exhibition of works from the UNSW

Art Collection, representing more than 30

leading Australian artists, was opened by the

Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Niland, on

21 February.

Artists represented include Cressida

Campbell, James Gleeson, Robert Klippel,

Fiona McDonald, George Milpurrumi, Jan

Senbergs, Imants Tillers and Aida Tomescu.

The exhibition, titled Art at UNSW, is de-

signed to illustrate the new UNSW

collection policy, initiated soon after the

university’s first full-time curator, Belinda

Allen, took up her post in 1993.

The basis of the new policy is to limit

works collected to those completed by Aus-

tralian artists since the university’s

foundation in 1949, particularly by those

who are represented in public collections or

who have received recognition through

awards and prizes. It is also intended that

works in the UNSW collection reflect im-

portant domains of human knowledge and

endeavour.

The exhibition catalogue, written by Ms

Allen, outlines the philosophy behind the

UNSW Art Collection of about 1,100 works

which has grown over the years by commis-

sion, acquisition and gift.

To recognise the contributions made by

Committee member, Mrs Jenny Birt, to the

UNSW Art Collection, an annual prize will

be awarded bearing her name to student

from the College of Fine Arts. Mrs Birt pre-

sented the inaugural winner of the prize

with cheque for $1,500 on the opening

Master of Art student, Vicki White, won the

inaugural award for her work entitled, The

Collection. Vicki plans to take some time

off and later will pursue Master of Fine Art

at COFA

The exhibition is open to the public until

Saturday 16 March. The Ivan Dougherty

Gallery is at the comer of Albion Avenue

and Selwyn Street, Paddington.

The exhibition of the paintings in the Jenny

Birt Award are on Level 1, Building F, Col-

lege of Fine Arts campus, until 15 March.

Remote sensing facility built on silicon graphics

UNSW is one of nine tertiary institu-

tions which have joined forces to es-

tablish new $2 million remote

sensing and geographical information sys-

tern (GISJ taci ty.

Located at UNSW, the facility is based on

Silicon Graphics Power Challenge high per-

formance computer.

Partners in the facility are UNSW and the

Australian Defence Force Academy, New-

castle, Sydney and Wollongong universities,

the Queensland University of Technology,

the Australian National University, the Uni-

versity of Technology Sydney and Charles

Sturt University.

The new facility will be used for range of

academic and commercial research

projects. It has been funded by the universi-

ties and the Australian Research Council.

“Our mission is to develop major process-

ing and analysis facility for remote sensing

and CIS,” Professor Trinder, Head of School

of Geomatic Engineering told Uniicen.

“None of the partners could have estab-

lished such facility on their own. By

working together we have been able to pool

our funding, and will now be able to share

our expertise and experiences, as well as the

information and computing power neces-

sary to carry out large projects,” he said.

While the Silicon Graphics Power Chal-

lenge and Silicon Graphics Indy server are

located at UNSW, each of the other partners

has Silicon Graphics Indy 3D graphics

workstation which is networked to the

Power Challenge.

“You don’t get $2 million facility like this

without support from industry and we are

grateful to Silicon Graphics and Leica, and

the software suppliers for their help in estab-

lishing such valuable centre,” Deputy

Vice-Chancellor (Research and Interna-

tional), Professor Chris Fell said.

“Proposed projects to be undertaken at the

Australian facility cover rural and urban

applications.”

Projects include the building of fire predic-

tion models and modelling of soil moisture

for the farming industry, and to model traf-

fic patterns for urban planning, Professor

Trinder said. Geomatic Engineering is al-

ready working on project for the National

Parks and Wildlife Service.

“We are monitoring the extent of the

wetlands in the Murray Darling Basin, Dr

Andrew Skidmore, Senior Lecturer in CIS,

said.

“The wetlands are changing as result of

farming and the diversion of water. We are

taking multiple full-scene Landsat images.

linking them and then classifying the

wetland areas. Ultimately the maps we

build will be posted on the Internet where

they can be accessed by councils and other

people interested in the wetlands,” Dr

Skidmore said.
