Fix this textBIG CHINA BOOK GIFT
Fix this textA twelve year old dream by a retired Sydney
Fix this texthighway engineer to foster friendly relations
Fix this textbetween the Australian and Chinese peoples has
Fix this textbecome a reality. Mr Howard Sherrard of
Fix this textCentennial Park, a former Commissioner for Main
Fix this textRoads in NSW, has given his collection of over
Fix this text6,000 books and pamphlets on China to the
Fix this textUniversity Library for the use of staff and
Fix this textstudents 'in order to provide a stimulus to the
Fix this textstudy of China and its people'.
Fix this textMr Sherrard, who has had a life-long interest in
Fix this textChina, conceived the idea of developing a library
Fix this textafter his second visit to China in 1967. This visit,
Fix this textwhiph was at the invitation of the Chinese
Fix this textGovernment, was at a time when no diplomatic
Fix this textrelations existed between the two countries and
Fix this textwhen contacts were few. The Australian Govern-
Fix this textment at that time was frightened of China', said
Fix this textMr Sherrard. 'My objective was to increase under-
Fix this textstanding of China by creating a collection which I
Fix this textwould eventually donate to a suitable and willing
Fix this textinstitution.'
Fix this textBy studying books on Chinese literature and
Fix this texthistory, bibliographies and the recommendations
Fix this textof academic experts, Mr Sherrard determined
Fix this textwhat titles were important and gradually built
Fix this textup his collection. Important out-of-print material
Fix this textwas obtained by sending lists of wanted books to
Fix this textsecond-hand dealers overseas.
Fix this textThe results of this twelve year search now cover
Fix this textthe walls of Mr Sherrard's large study. The
Fix this textvolumes are mainly in English but there is a size-
Fix this textable number of Chinese language publications
Fix this textwhich include the dynastic histories. The whole
Fix this textcollection encompasses a wide range of topics
Fix this textand areas of China, including history, economics,
Fix this textphilosophy, language and politics. There are
Fix this textnumerous periodicals, including some journals of
Fix this texthigh repute which are not easily available.
Fix this textMr Sherrard said he chose the University as the
Fix this textrepository for the collection because of his early
Fix this textassociations with UNSW (he was the Executive
Fix this textDirector of the Institute of Traffic and Highway
Fix this textResearch 1963-66) and because of the assurances
Fix this texthe received about the value of the collection to
Fix this textthe University. Also the University has a large
Fix this textnumber of Asian students and is in the
Fix this textcity with the largest Asian population.
Fix this textCommenting on the gift, the Acting Vice-
Fix this textChancellor, Professor Ray Golding, said 'there is
Fix this textno doubt that the collection is extremely
Fix this textimpressive. It has direct relevance to the several
Fix this textcourses of Chinese studies offered in the Univer-
Fix this textsity, as well as to the research activities of the
Fix this textstaff members concerned'. Professor Golding
Fix this textpointed out that the growth rate of student
Fix this textnumbers in the Chinese subjects of the University
Fix this textis 'phenomenally high'. 'At present', he said, 'our
Fix this textLibrary is having great difficulties coping with
Fix this textthe increased demand by students for materials
Fix this textin China studies. We are indeed most grateful for
Fix this textthis magnificent gift which will be of lasting value
Fix this textto the staff and students of the University.'
Fix this textSocial Sciences librarian Mr Alan Walker is at
Fix this textpresent arranging to transfer the collection to the
Fix this textUniversity in consultation with Mr Sherrard. The
Fix this textcollection is to be housed initially in a vacant
Fix this textarea between the Undergraduate Library and the
Fix this textSocial Sciences and Humanities Library on level
Fix this text3 of the Library Building.
Fix this textBeggars’ Opera
Fix this text'Of all animals of prey, man is the
Fix this textonly sociable one. Every one of us
Fix this textpreys upon his neighbour, and yet
Fix this textwe herd together.' That's the
Fix this textobservation of Lockit, gloating
Fix this textthat he will outwit hiS daughter
Fix this textwho has just helped the highway-
Fix this textman McHeath escape the gallows.
Fix this textScott McGregor played Lockit
Fix this textand Susan Lyons played Lucy
Fix this textLockit in the recent production
Fix this textof The Beggars' Opera by final
Fix this textyear students of the National
Fix this textInstitute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).
Fix this textAubrey Mellor, a lecturer in
Fix this textActing, directed the opera.
Fix this textScenery, props and costumes for
Fix this textthe production were made by
Fix this textTechnical Production and Design
Fix this textstudents and NIDA staff.
Fix this textThe Beggars' Opera was written
Fix this textin 1727 by John Gay at the
Fix this textsuggestion of Jonathan Swift as a
Fix this textsatire of contemporary social con-
Fix this textditions and the then fashionable
Fix this textimported 'ltalian' opera. The
Fix this textballad opera, set in London's
Fix this textsqualid streets and with a high-
Fix this textwayman as hero, was a huge
Fix this textsuccess; the audiences responded
Fix this textto both the lampooning of
Fix this textfamiliar political figures and to
Fix this textthe establishment of a theatre
Fix this textform in their own language and
Fix this textmusic.
Fix this textUNSW TO TEST
Fix this textARCHITECTURAL GLASS
Fix this textAn impact testing rig for architectural glazing
Fix this textmaterial has been set up in the architecture and
Fix this textbuilding research laboratory of the Faculty of
Fix this textArchitecture, and is now available for use by
Fix this textglass-panel manufacturers through Unisearch Ltd,
Fix this textthe University's research and development
Fix this textcompany. The rig, which simulates the impact of
Fix this texta human body on a glass panel, has been given
Fix this textto the University 'on permanent loan' by the
Fix this textNorthern Metropolitan Health Region of the
Fix this textHealth Commission of NSW. It had used the rig
Fix this textin a recent study of the impact characteristics of
Fix this textglass panels.
Fix this textTesting specifications
Fix this textThe rig tests glass panels in accordance with a
Fix this textstandard specification — AS2208 1978 — which
Fix this texthas been drawn up by the Standards Association
Fix this textof Australia in cooperation with glass manufac-
Fix this textturers and merchants. The specification sets out
Fix this texttest methods for determining the types of glazing
Fix this textmaterials, both glass and plastic, which are suit-
Fix this textable for use in locations where they are liable to
Fix this texthuman impact.
Fix this textThe rig consists of a steel frame on which a door-
Fix this textsized panel of glass can be fixed. A leather bag
Fix this textcontaining 46 kg of lead shot is allowed to crash
Fix this textinto the glass. It is designed to simulate the
Fix this textenergy level of a small boy running at full speed.
Fix this textIf the glass successfully withstands impact it is
Fix this textcertified as suitable for safety glazing.
Fix this textConcern at accidents
Fix this textThe Head of the School of Building, Professor
Fix this textRay Toakley, said that the standards and tests
Fix this texthad been devised because of concern at the
Fix this textnumber of accidents in which people had crashed
Fix this textthrough glass partitions. ’Safety glazing' materials
Fix this texthad been developed to reduce the severity of
Fix this textglass laceration injuries. These resist fracture due
Fix this textto impact or hold the broken pieces tightly
Fix this texttogether.
Fix this textProfessor Toakley said that as well as testing
Fix this textcommercially manufactured glass panels the rig
Fix this textwould be used to experiment with loads in a
Fix this textvariety of different situations. 'Little information
Fix this textis available', he said, 'about what happens to glass
Fix this textpanels if a person falls off a chair and hits the
Fix this textglass, or bumps it with elbow or simply shoulders
Fix this textit.' In different situations different energy levels
Fix this textare applied and additional equipment and
Fix this textmeasuring techniques need to be developed to
Fix this textdetermine what they are.
Fix this textProfessor Toakley said that more work needs to
Fix this textbe done to check out the impact energy specifica-
Fix this texttion of the standard. 'We need to know', he said,
Fix this text'what thicknesses or types of glass are more
Fix this textappropriate for different situations. And beyond
Fix this textthis we need to know what are the acceptable
Fix this textlevels of safety, which take into account both
Fix this textcosts and desirable safety levels.' Professor
Fix this textToakley can in fact see the possibility of the
Fix this textSchool playing a research role in the resolution of
Fix this textany conflicts which might arise between the
Fix this textauthorities and the building industry over safety
Fix this textglass standards.
Fix this textIn charge of the rig will be Mr Clyde Smythe, a
Fix this textlecturer in the School, who is working closely
Fix this textwith Professor Toakley on the safety problem of
Fix this textarchitectural glass. Mr. Smythe is at present on
Fix this textstudy leave in Britain where he is talking to
Fix this textleading glass manufacturers. Until Mr Smythe
Fix this textreturns at the end of September 1979, inquiries
Fix this textabout the rig should be made to Professor
Fix this textToakley on ext 2189.
Fix this textOpen Day
Fix this textAll faculties and schools have been asked to
Fix this textgive details of their planned activities on
Fix this textOpen Obv to the Executive Officer, Open
Fix this textDay Working Party, Mr Peter O'Brien, as
Fix this textsoon as possible. Open Day will be held this
Fix this textyear on Saturday 22 September, Mr O'Brien
Fix this textcan be contacted on ext 2482.
Fix this textThe Working Party has decided that the $5O
Fix this textPrize lor the winner of the Open Day Poster
Fix this textCompetition will not be awarded because no
Fix this textentry was of a sufficiently high standard.
Fix this textThe poster wilt instead be designed by the
Fix this textPublications Unit.
