Fix this textAn employment survey of recent
Fix this textUNSW Commerce graduates has shown
Fix this textthat more than half obtained their first
Fix this textfull-time job before completing their
Fix this textdegree and of the remainder, 75 per cent
Fix this textwere employed in their first job within a
Fix this textmonth. Sixty-eight per cent of the
Fix this textrespondents said their first job was their
Fix this textpreferred choice.
Fix this textThe purpose of the survey was to
Fix this textobtain information on the employment
Fix this textexperiences of Commerce graduates and
Fix this texttheir views on the relevance on under-
Fix this textgraduate courses for their subsequent
Fix this textemployment and careers.
Fix this textThe Faculty of Commerce sent question-
Fix this textnaires to 2,088 graduates who completed degrees
Fix this textin 1974-78. Of those who replied, about 98 per
Fix this textcent were currently employed in these areas:
Fix this textPer cent
Fix this textpublic accountancy 25
Fix this textmanufacturing/mining/construction 22

Fix this textThe Dean of the Faculty of Commerce,
Fix this textProfessor Athol Carrington, said one intention
Fix this texthad been to ascertain whether Commerce courses
Fix this textwere helping graduates to perform adequately in
Fix this texttheir jobs. The Faculty was also hoping to see
Fix this textnew areas for study and courses which need
Fix this textgreater or less emphasis.
Fix this text'Continual fine tuning and recognition of
Fix this textnew fields are k essential if we are to maintain
Fix this textrelevance for both professional and intellectual
Fix this textneeds. From the survey, we have seen that the
Fix this textcourses seem to be meeting the main require-
Fix this textments of the people taking them. This is
Fix this textevidenced by the big demand for places and the
Fix this textsuccess with which graduates find placement in
Fix this textthe workforce and promotion.
Fix this text'We were extremely pleased with the level of
Fix this textresponse. The respondents not only answered
Fix this textquestions, but added cogent comments from
Fix this textwhich some clear trends emerged which will be
Fix this textof value to the Faculty', said Professor Carring-
Fix this textton.
Fix this textThe majority of respondents reported that
Fix this texttheir degree had been important in obtaining
Fix this texttheir first job and at salaries comparable to
Fix this textaverage weekly earnings of non-professional
Fix this textemployees in NSW. The proportion of graduates
Fix this textobtaining their first full-time job prior to com-
Fix this textpleting their degree was highest in the case of
Fix this textAccounting, Finance and Systems (63 per cent),
Fix this textfollowed by Economics (51 per cent). Marketing
Fix this text(46 per cent) and Industrial Relations (35 per
Fix this textcent). .
Fix this textIn addition to completing their professional
Fix this textaccountancy year or practical legal training,
Fix this textmany graduates undertook short courses or
Fix this textlecture series including management, computing
Fix this textand programming, secretarial and effective com-
Fix this textmunication, mainly as in-house, government or
Fix this textprivately organized courses.
Fix this textAbout 20 per cent undertook some type of
Fix this textpostgraduate degree or diploma and there was
Fix this textconsiderable evidence that graduates saw a need
Fix this textfor this mainly for reasons of employment.
Fix this text'The areas of particular interest were
Fix this textfinance, information systems, business ano tax
Fix this textlaw, marketing, industrial relations and
Fix this textbehavioural science', said Professor Carrington.

Fix this textAlmost every time an optometrist
Fix this textprescribes a pair of contact lenses, he or
Fix this textshe donates one dollar towards research
Fix this textinto their improvement. This is because
Fix this text85 per cent of Australia's optometrists pay
Fix this textan extra 50 cents for each contact lens
Fix this textthey buy from the manufacturer, which
Fix this textgoes to the National Cornea and Contact
Fix this textLens Research Fund. Two-thirds of the
Fix this textFund helps to finance the Cornea and Con-
Fix this texttact Lens Research Unit in the School of
Fix this textOptometry, and the remainder goes to a
Fix this textsimilar research group in the University of
Fix this textMelbourne.
Fix this textThe Unit at UNSW has made signifi-
Fix this textcant contributions to contact lens improve-
Fix this textment by developing thin lenses which
Fix this textreduce fluid build-up in the eye, soft lenses
Fix this textand better ways of fitting extended-wear
Fix this textlenses. Among major developments by the
Fix this textUnit are new methods of measuring the
Fix this texteffect of contact lens wear on the eye.
Fix this textThe Director of the CCLRU and Senior
Fix this textLecturer in the School, Dr Brian Holden, with Mr
Fix this textSteve Zantos, a researcher in the Unit, have
Fix this textdeveloped a system for photographing a vital part
Fix this textof the eye called the corneal endothelium. This is
Fix this texta layer of cells which control the amount of fluid
Fix this textin the cornea. By photographing the endo-
Fix this textthelium, Dr Holden and Mr Zantos discovered
Fix this textthat it undergoes a previously unknown change
Fix this textwhen contact lenses are first applied.
Fix this textThe reaction, which appears as dark patches
Fix this textamong the endothelial cells, is caused by the
Fix this textcontact lens blocking the oxygen supply to the
Fix this textcornea. It is the same physiological change which
Fix this textappears when the eye closes and the eyelid shuts
Fix this textoff the air-flow. The CCLRU's discovery of this
Fix this textunknown side effect of contact lens wear has
Fix this textstimulated a re-assessment of scientists' under-
Fix this textstanding of corneal physiology, and of how
Fix this textcontact lenses affect eyes.
Fix this textTo measure the overall stress of the cornea,
Fix this textCCLRU researcher Mr Stephen Payor designed
Fix this textand built a micro pachometer linked to a com-
Fix this textputer. The computer reads the information from
Fix this textthe pachometer and transmits it to a screen
Fix this textwhere it can be translated into graphs or text.
Fix this textThe micro pachometer is able to measure both
Fix this textthe cornea and the swelling of its individual
Fix this textlayers.
Fix this textAs well as the contributions from most of
Fix this textAustralia's optometrists, which amounted to
Fix this text$lB,OOO for 1980 the Unit also received
Fix this text$102,000 from industry this year, and $47,000
Fix this textfrom the National Health and Medical Research
Fix this textCouncil for 1980/81.
Fix this textThe only thing they lack, according to Dr
Fix this textHolden, is space. The Unit has grown so much in
Fix this textits six-year history that the number of rooms it
Fix this textoccupies in the Newton Building is now quite
Fix this textinadequate. Dr Holden said they hope for extra
Fix this textroom in the future.

Fix this textThe Department of Fuel Technology in the
Fix this textSchool of Chemical Engineering and Industrial
Fix this textChemistry has received a $60,000 grant from the
Fix this textNSW Electricity Commission to study dust
Fix this textemissions from open-cut coal mining in the
Fix this textHunter Valley area of NSW.
Fix this textThe project will be co-ordinated by Asso-
Fix this textciate Professor Geoff Sergeant, Director of the
Fix this textEnergy Research Development and Information
Fix this textCentre (ERDIC), with Dr Ken Basden, a senior
Fix this textlecturer in the Department, as chief scientific
Fix this textadviser. The grant will provide salaries for a
Fix this textprofessional officer and a technical officer and
Fix this textfor a three-year postgraduate scholarship.
Fix this textAccording to Professor Sergeant, the NSW
Fix this textElectricity Commission was keen for these
Fix this textstudies to be carried out following the recent
Fix this textproblems experienced by people living in com-
Fix this textmunities near the Ravensworth open-cut mine in
Fix this textthe Hunter Valley.
Fix this textHe said little or no studies had been made
Fix this texton dust emissions from open-cut coal mines
Fix this textbecause this type of mining was mainly used in
Fix this textisolated areas, such as in Queensland. Serious
Fix this textdust emission problems are not experienced in
Fix this textthe La Trobe Valley in Victoria, where the
Fix this textopen-cut system is used, because the coal there
Fix this textcontains 66 per cent moisture.
Fix this textDr Ken Basden has been conducting studies
Fix this textof air pollution for some time. He will be making
Fix this textuse of equipment in the School of Mining
Fix this textEngineering, such as the Zeiss Microvideomat 2
Fix this textImage Analyser, to measure the size of distribu-
Fix this texttion of coal dust. He will also be using deposition
Fix this textgauges and high volume samplers.
Fix this textProfessor Sergeant said the coal in the
Fix this textHunter Valley was very fine, dusty material.
Fix this textAfter initial blasting to work through the rock
Fix this textlayer, miners often carried out further blasting of
Fix this textthe coal seam. Coal is then removed using the
Fix this textdrag line process where it is scooped up by a
Fix this textcrane and deposited elsewhere. When the coal is
Fix this textreleased by the crane, it can form mushroom
Fix this textclouds of dust which travel long distances. 'There
Fix this texthas always been a lot of dust, but the scale of
Fix this textopen-cut coal mining in the Hunter Valley
Fix this textwill be stepped-up and people have not always
Fix this textbeen so environmentally conscious', said Pro-
Fix this textfessor Sergeant,
