Fix this textUNSW windmill wins international prize
Fix this textA revolutionary new windmill that pumps three or four times as much water as a
Fix this textconventional mill of similar size has taken out first prize for a UNSW group in the Universi-
Fix this textties Invention Section of the 1982 Technology Exchange Fair held in Atlanta, USA.
Fix this textThis is the second consecutive year a
Fix this textUNSW invention has won first prize, a par-
Fix this textticular satisfaction to the University's research
Fix this textand development company, Unisearch Ltd,
Fix this textwhich is actively promoting inventions by
Fix this textUniversity staff both overseas and in Australia.
Fix this textUnisearch is currently carrying out negotia-
Fix this texttions with Mono Pumps (Australia) Ltd for
Fix this textcommercial production of the windmill.
Fix this text(The ISBI first prize was won by the Uni-
Fix this textsearch Activated Sludge Process (UN ISAS)
Fix this textfor treating water polluted by organic material.
Fix this textUN ISAS was developed by a team in the
Fix this textSchool of Textile Technology.)
Fix this textThe windmill inventors are a team from the
Fix this textDepartment of Mechanical Engineering in the
Fix this textFaculty of Military Studies at Duntroon, Lecturers
Fix this textDr John Baird (Project Leader) and Mr lan Linnett,
Fix this textand Technical Officer Mr John McLeod,
Fix this textThe Mono Wind Turbine, as it's called, has a
Fix this textvertical axis turbine which drives a helical rotor
Fix this textpump. But the key to the machine's high perfor-
Fix this textmance is the specially designed clutch that lets the
Fix this textmachine make better use of the available wind
Fix this textenergy. The turbine turns at a speed appropriate to
Fix this textthe wind and 'stores up' energy until there is enough
Fix this textto engage the clutch and start the pump.
Fix this textComputer calculations have been used to get
Fix this textthe best out of the energy available at any par-
Fix this textticular time.
Fix this textApart from its increased efficiency, the wind
Fix this textturbine is easier to maintain than conventional
Fix this textwindmills, which will make it especially suitable for
Fix this textuse in isolated sites on properties.
Fix this textSome farms have as many as 60 windmills to
Fix this textpump water for stock which means a great deal of
Fix this textmaintenance with conventional mills, or the installa-
Fix this texttion of an engine-driven pump.
Fix this textDr Baird says the concept for this innovative
Fix this textmachine grew gradually. 'The idea of using rotary
Fix this textmotion was always attractive but when helical
Fix this textrotor pumps stop, it's difficult to restart them. Most
Fix this textpeople who looked at the problem said it couldn't
Fix this textbe solved but we thought "we've got to disengage
Fix this textthe pump". That is the inevitable solution if you
Fix this textpersist with it.'
Fix this textThe team could not quite believe the extent of
Fix this textthe new machine's superior efficiency at first. 'That
Fix this textwas a great revelation to me', says Dr Baird, 'and
Fix this textI ran the figures through the computer and did the
Fix this textcalculations over and over to be sure'.
Fix this textField tests are still underway and preliminary
Fix this textresults have confirmed the computer predicition.
Fix this textMono Pumps (Australia) Ltd supported the original
Fix this textresearch and is currently funding the development
Fix this textprogram.
Fix this textPatent applications are now being lodged by
Fix this textUnisearch in Australia and a number of overseas
Fix this textcountries.
Fix this textDr Baird hopes the Mono Wind Turbine will be
Fix this texton sale by the end of the year at a price he says will
Fix this textmean more water pumped per dollar than with
Fix this textexisting windmills. With its greater efficiency and
Fix this textlow maintenance, he predicts it will make con-
Fix this textventional mills obsolete.

Fix this textIt's a chance to talk about life and
Fix this textstudies at UNSW.
Fix this textMedical knowledge needs better applications
Fix this textMistakes made by doctors result more
Fix this textfrequently from an inability to apply medical
Fix this textknowledge than from the lack of it, accord-
Fix this texting to the Director of UNSW's Centre for
Fix this textIV dical Education Research and Develop-
Fix this textment, Professor Ken Cox.
Fix this textThis is one of the conclusions reached in
Fix this texta book he has almost completed on how
Fix this textdoctors work out what is wrong with a
Fix this textpatient and then decide what to do.
Fix this textPitching his book primarily at the medical
Fix this textprofession. Professor Cox aims to isolate the
Fix this textfactors which might have some bearing on
Fix this textthe diagnostic process and in doing so, lay the
Fix this textfoundations for a scientific theory of clinical
Fix this textpractice. But it has been written in such a
Fix this textway as to appeal to lay people interested in
Fix this textgaining a better understanding of the doctor's
Fix this texttask and of the role the patient plays in
Fix this texthelping towards an accurate diagnosis.
Fix this textProfessor Cox says he first became troubled
Fix this textabout clinical decision making eight years ago while
Fix this textworking as a surgeon in a Sydney hospital. There he
Fix this textfound that when young interns had difficulties
Fix this textmaking decisions about patients, they would often
Fix this text'procrastinate by investigation'. This usually meant
Fix this textrunning a series of tests which took up valuable time
Fix this textin cases where surgery was required. To Professor
Fix this textCox, this inability to readily apply medical
Fix this textknowledge in the clinical situation suggested the
Fix this texttraining of doctors in this regard was inadequate.
Fix this textFurther investigation revealed that very little in-
Fix this textformation was available on the subject and that
Fix this textmedicine does not really have a theory of practice.
Fix this textProfessor Cox is very much in favour of medical
Fix this textcourses which place a heavy emphasis on problem-
Fix this textsolving and decision-making, in preference to those
Fix this textwhich simply impart knowledge. One of the dangers
Fix this textinherent in the growing amount of medical informa-
Fix this texttion, he believes, is that cramming for exams will
Fix this texttake precedence over practical experience.
Fix this textIn his book he discusses various aspects of the
Fix this textclinical situation like patients' goals, doctors'
Fix this textassumptions, stresses on doctors (including fear of
Fix this textmaking a mistake), skills in interviewing and non-
Fix this textverbal communication. In order to present a variety
Fix this textof views, he has written each chapter as if it were the
Fix this textscript of a medical course tutorial in which a
Fix this textfictitious doctor deals with the various issues. This
Fix this textdevice not only enables the author to present con-
Fix this textflicting viewpoints, but also makes the book easy
Fix this textand enjoyable to read.
Fix this textWhile not pretending to have all the answers.
Fix this textProfessor Cox hopes his book will make doctors
Fix this textaware of possibilities which could help them
Fix this textdiagnose patients' problems more efficiently. As for
Fix this textlay people, he hopes it will encourage them to take
Fix this textmore responsibility for themselves in the clinical
Fix this textsituation.
Fix this textProfessor Cox is currently completing the final
Fix this textchapter and hopes to have the book on the inter-
Fix this textnational market within a year.
