Fix this texta plastic chamber (or cuvette) that fits into a centri-
Fix this textfuge which spins round and forces the red cells to
Fix this textone end of the chamber. This leaves the activator
Fix this textand plasma which are transparent, at the other end.
Fix this text(The plasma is the part of the blood responsible for
Fix this textclotting.) As the activator works, the plasma clots
Fix this textand turns opaque. This process is picked up by
Fix this textlight sensors which relay information onto an
Fix this textoscilliscope. A built-in stopwatch records the time
Fix this texttaken for the blood to clot.
Fix this textIn theory, says Dr Bertram, the blood sample
Fix this textused for testing could be siphoned off from the
Fix this textdialysis machine automatically. With the prototype,
Fix this texta sample is drawn off manually.

Fix this textand the researchers are having discussions with several
Fix this textpossible manufacturers. More work is planned to
Fix this textdelineate the machine’s usefulness in open heart
Fix this textsurgery. But this is being hampered by difficulties in

Fix this textof disposable plastic cuvettes to hold the blood
Fix this textsamples for the experiments. At the moment, each
