Christmas in Rabaul, 1917

THE Rabaul Garrison Officers held Dinner

on Boxing Night, Dec. 26, 1917. Their

guests included the Acting Administrator and

Staff, the Captain and Officers of His Majesty?s

warship in port, and visiting Officers from

Kokopo and Bita Paka. This was the first

occasion on which the Acting Administrator

had the opportunity of meeting all his Officers

at public function. At the conclusion of

the dinner, after the loyal toasts, Capt. Lyng,

the President-elect of the Mess, in felicitous

speech, wished His Excellency and Staff, all

the visitors and Messmates, the compliments

of the season, and expressed hope that they

might celebrate the next Christmas at home

after having secured victorious peace. It

gave him great pleasure to have the honor of

presiding on this night. Commander Groady

supported the toast, which was drunk with

musical honors. The Acting Administrator,

Colonel Mackenzie expressed his appreciation

for the invitation tendered to himself and

his Staff to be present on this occasion. It

was always pleasure for Headquarters?

Staff to come and enjoy the good fellowship

and hospitality of the Officers' Mess. He

thanked them for the kindly references that

had been made to his presence amongst

them in the capacity of Acting Adminis-

ter and for the manner in which they had

drunk his health. The task that had

fallen to them in the present war was

the Military Administration of this Colony,

and he wished to emphasise the fact that

upon their actions and service depended in

large measure the prestige and honour of the

British Administration. It was within their

power to perform this allotted task in

manner that would command respect and

produce permanent results in the history of

the Colony. He pleaded for earnestness and

efficiency in their work. In response to the

toast of the visitors, Capt. Wilkinson suitably

replied. The remainder of the evening was

sociably spent.

In response to the kind invitation of Major

and Mrs. Newport, the Acting Administrator

and Staff, the Matron, Sisters, and Garrison

ladies, the Officers of the visiting warships,

and Garrison Officers, were present at

native sing-sing held in the Gardens on

December 27. Sing-sings were rendered by

the Bukas, the famous Buka Band being

represented the natives of Kaiser Wil-

helmsland gave their dance in full war-

paint the Arawe (South New Britain)

thrilled the spectators with their primitive

music, and the Toma boys gave their

characteristic dance. The whole scene, lit

up by tropic moon, had weird effect, and

one could see an excellent representation of

the various dances without the trouble of

visiting the natives in their far-off homes.

The guests, after partaking of the hos-

pitality of Majorand Mrs. Newport, departed,

having enjoyed an interesting evening.

The Officers Mess entertained the Acting

Administrator and Staff, the Matron and

Sisters the Officers? wives, the A.A.M.S. and

Garrison at social evening in the Mess
