S. Barnabas’ E)as anb the flDdanestan ffiMssion-

Interior of the Patteson Memorial Chapel, S. Barnabas, Norfolk Island.

Beattie, Photo., Hobart

HKRE is whole world of interest in the points of

contact between the history of the Melanesian Mission

and the recurring Festival of S. Barnabas. There is

the interest that comes of instruction for the events

associated with that day in one year or another repre-

sent practically all the stages of the Mission’s progress and the rise

of all the problems that now confront the Mission. I'here is also

the interest that is fraught with inspiration for that day brings

us into touch with the lives of the men who have led the Mission.

It was in 1849 that Bishop Selwyn began the Mission with the

little schooner Undine. Next year his old school Eton rallied to his

support with its first meeting in aid of the work in New Zealand

and Melanesia on S. Barnabas’ Day, 1850. Eton gave two

bishops to New Zealand, George Selwyn and Charles Abraham

(Wellington), and two to Melanesia, John Coleridge Patteson and

John Richardson Selwyn and for sixty years S. Barnabas’ Day

at Eton has meant commemoration of the Melanesian Mission.
