1941

Dear Menzies,

Yqu will. I'm sure, have forgotten my existence

during the last six or seven eventful months; my excuse for re-

minding you of my presence in this country is that am on the

point of leaving it. begin my return journey to Australia the

day after tomorrow and am due to reach Sydney by the MONTEREY on

January 28th and to disembark at Melbourne on February 1st.

shall not burden you with details of the way in

which have spent the six months since last wrote to you. Ex-

cept fpr the couple of months when was at the Legation licking

stamps etc for Casey immediately after Keith Officer departure,

have been very much on the move in Chicago and the Middle

West; in the‘southern States of North Carolina, Alabama and Tenn-

essee; in New York, Boston and other New England cities. recent-

ly arrived in California after three weeks trip across Canada,

during which talked to branches of the Canadian Institute of

International Affairs in Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Regina,Sask-

atoon, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria B.C., on "Australia in the

Present War". During the intervals of collecting information on

American opinion, have managed to deliver myself of some thirty

to forty pages on the Australian section of the forthcoming Harvard

volume on THE BRITISH COMONWEALTH AT WAR, edited by Professor W.Y.

Elliott. have today also posted back to Boston the galley proofs

of fifty-page booklet on THE UNITED STATES AND AUSTRALIA. This

is to be published at the end of January, with an introduction by

the Master of one of the Colleges at Yale, as the first of

3erie3 of pamphlets on America and World Affairs which one of the

Foundations is to inflict on the unsuspecting American public. In

both these jobs have tried to be objective; hope nevertheless

that the result may not be entirely without value to cause which

we both support.

My immediate purpose in writing is to tell you that

am at your disposal in any way which you or any of your colleagues

may care to use me during the month of February. have made tenta-

tive plans to spend the first ten days of that month in Melbourne,

then to visit Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane before returning to

Melbourne and, thereafter, to have couple of days in Adelaide

before resuming my duties at the University of Western Australia

early in March.
