Dear Mr. Menzies,

The report in the *Age* this morning of your

address at the Camberwell Town Hall last night makes

very disappointing reading. Perhaps this is due largely

to the fact that the report is necessarily very abbreviated,

and if one had heard the full address or could see the script

of your talk one might get very different impression.

But was particularly disappointed by the report

of your remarks about the proposed international Trade

Organisation, and the way in which you are reported to have

said that it would affect Australia. Like yourself, took

week off during the Christmas vacation to prepare paper

on this subject for the Summer School of the Institute of

Political Science, which was held towards the end of January.

Consequently had to read through the drafts of the proposed

organisation and the various proposals for the reduction of

trade barriers. It seemed to me that Australia had potentially

great deal to gain by being willing to go into the International

Trade Conference in spirit of being prepared to make con-

cessions in return for concessions which might be much more

valuable to her than what she gave away. In particular, it

seemed to me that, if Britain takes the view that she cannot

afford imperial preference, then it is pretty selfish on the

part of the dominions to try to force her to maintain the system

against the interests of the British people. Actually do not

think it is in our own long-term interest to try to maintain

our favoured position in the British market, since the British

market cannot solve the problem of finding outlets for many of

our major exports.

would have thought that, even if your party were

in Office and you the leader of the Government, your attitude

towards these matters would have been in favour of general
