DAWNET-MOTJLD, W.R.

rumour to supplant Mr. Mmizies

-top o-the hill ”leader as

161 ABBOTT STREET

SANDRINGHAM, S.8

My dear R. G.,

During the years was the Secretary for the L.C.P.

Victorian Parliamentary Party, built up quite substantial

grapevine there were few moves, political, of which was not

informed. That merely in explanation of what want to tell you.

About four months back was told that there was

strong move to supplant you as Leader of the Federal L.C.P. and,

more particularly, as Prime Minister* Although from more than

one source, took little notice putting it down to back-bench

rumblings. Immediately after the end of the Federal session

heard the rumour again. This was confirmed in rather unusual

way and, as what follows came directly from daily-pressman,

want you to appreciate that it is not ’done’ to abuse source of

information by telling the party concerned. It seemed so much in

confirmation of previous rumours that thought you should be told*

Federal Roundsman for one of the Sydney dailies

visited me at Parliament House, seeking from me confirmation

of one aspect of the scheme to lose you. While know that he

was Herald/Sun contact, It seemed funny that Sydneysider should

seek any information in Melbourne. So far as can gather the

inspiration originated in the Bank of N.S.W. and followed the lines

that would emerge from Senate defeat seeking scapegoat as

blind. While you are in England, Senate defeat or not, glean

that Dick Casey is groomed to take your place after setting aside

competition of Harold Holt. The modus being to see that you are

detained in England on ’matters of importance’ of nature that

could be elongated to ensure that any change of leadership would be

arranged in manner which would avoid any loss of face to you*

It appears that Harrison is not acceptable; to whom do not know.

Although now outside and classified as rebel, I.

am anxious that nothing be done to upset either your own leadership

of the Party or as P.M.,AMD am doing what can to negate the

activities of Warner here,(leading agroup of financial discontents

associated with the electrical equipment trade etc.) who has been

preaching against you for the past three years*

This may not be news to you and it may be lot of

hot air, you will judge that. know that you will respect my

confidence, although it has occasioned breach by myself in cir-
