CONFIDENTIAL  

Government House,  

Canberra.  

20th November, 1953.  

Dear Mrs. Menzies,  

have the honour to inform you  

that it has been ascertained that Her Majesty The Queen  

would be graciously pleased to approve of your being  

created Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent  

Order of the British Empire and am, therefore,  

directed by His Excellency the Governor-General to  

request you to telegraph me whether this honour would  

be acceptable to you.  

In conformity with the necessity for  

secrecy at this stage, please confine your telegram  

to "Official Secretary, Government House, Canberra.  

Gratefully accept. Menzies", or use the phrase  

"Beg to Decline."  

Should you wish to decline, should  

be glad if you would confirm the telegram with  

letter expressing the reasons therefore.

appears in the press, you are requested to regard  

the matter as strictly confidential.
