TOP SECRET.

MIHAMED ALI

mohamed Als

P. Mof PAKISTAN

CABLEGRAM

PRIE WINISTER OF PAKISTAN

From

PRINE MINISTER OF AUSTRALIA

PERSONAL FOR HIISELF.

11/53

As gather that the question of Pakistan becoming Republic

is likely soon to be under active consideration, hope you will

allow me friend’s privilege to send you this message.

know that

your people have had frustrations and disappointments. But they

have many friends in the Commonwealth, including great number in

Australia, These friends, including myself, have derived special

satisfaction from the knowledge that, in spite of pressure and example,

Pakistan has remained, as in her brave and loyal past, staunch

adherent of the Crown and member of that brotherhood under the Crown

which for one felt so strongly when you and were at the Coronation.

Affairs of the heart and spirit

seldom lend themselves to cold

analysis, but am sure that it would come as cold and depressing

thing to many millions of us if we found that the character of this

intimate association had been changed into something more distant and

more formal, and therefore less real and instinctive,

It has been my privilege, as you know, since my close and

affectionate association with your great predecessor Liaquat Ali Khan,

to help Pakistan in small degree in ways published and unpublished.

You are my colleague and friend. Could I, without abusing friendship,

remind you that the independence of both Pakistan and Australia is

complete. It is not limited by the Throne. On the contrary, our

common relation to the throne gives us an additional strength by

sentiment and association. We are, after all, dependent upon one

another, and the closer and warmer are our mutual loyalties the more

real our inter-dependency will become.

Please regard these remarks as sincere expression by one who

has nothing but friendship and admiration for both your country and

vourself.

Kind regards.
