LONDON, S. W. 1.

COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA.

Sunday, 9th May, 1937.

PERSONAL AND

CONIDA),

My dear Attorney General

There is very little to chronicle of the

voyage to England, which reached ten days ago. It

compared but ill with the two ""Otranto"" voyages, but

was more enjoyable than the return journey in June last

year, From Fremantle and Colombo went sightseeing,

(two excursions which would recommend), in the first

instance to see New Norcia, the little Spanish town

consisting of cathedral, monastery and colleges, set up

by Benedictine missionaries one hundred years ago; and

the second, went down to Galle, at the southern end

of Ceylon.

It was the former port and has beautiful

natural harbour, thogh its wharves are deserted today.

The town is on promontory,

.. blue promontory, with trees

upon it that nod unto the world"",

completely walled round, and its narrow streets with

Dutch colonial houses, low, whitewashed, barred with

heavy shutters, and several old Dutch churches, are

practically unchanged since the 18th century.

At Aden had lunch with Sir Bernard Reilly. As Aden

had been severed from Bombay the week before and is now

colony, the Commissioner has become Governor and the

old Residency has also gone up one, becoming Government

House. The only two remaining links with India appear

to be the right of appeal to the High Court and the rupee

coinage. Peter Davey, the Private Secretary, asked

particularly to be remembered to you. The tortoise,

who has been christened Lord Lamington since the latter’s

visit to Aden, is still there.

Hughes very kindly sent his car down to Suez to fetch me

to Cairo, where had long day. saw the new
