Fix this textSpeech by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzles
Fix this textSir,
Fix this textRecently I was in London. I started off thinking I
Fix this textwas on holiday and I ended up by attending the funeral of the
Fix this textgreatest man of our time. I was very impressed by a number of
Fix this textmatters associated with it. For example, his body lay in state
Fix this textin Westminster Hall. Westminster Hall is the most famous building
Fix this textin our history. It is very old. It was built by William Rufus,
Fix this textDark, sombre, full of history. And there, on a little dais, lay
Fix this textthe coffin with its custodians in uniform, and along two lines
Fix this textthrough the Hall there came the citizens of London, young and old,
Fix this textthousand after thousand, paying their homage*
Fix this textI had wondered very much myself whether this great
Fix this textman, who was at the peak of his greatness more than twenty years
Fix this textago, might be forgotten by younger people. I knew that grey-headed
Fix this textpeople like myself would never forget him; particularly those who
Fix this textlike myself were fortunate enough to know him and to know him
Fix this textwell. For us, it would be impossible to forget him. But Ì thought
Fix this textthat those who were children in the greatest moments of his glory
Fix this textmight now regard him as a remote historic figure of no more
Fix this textparticular interest than other historic figures in the school-
Fix this textbooks.
Fix this textI was delightfully pleased to see that a good half
Fix this textof all those who came through were young, exhibiting every possible
Fix this textmixture from those who looked quite usual to boys with long hair
Fix this textand girls with short hair. They all came through solemnly, with
Fix this textrespect. It was a most amazing tribute and it confirmed in my
Fix this textmind the belief which I have always entertained that one of the
Fix this textgreat things in our character is a sense of continuity, that we
Fix this textare not here today and gone tomorrow, that we have had people
Fix this textbefore us and we will have people afper us; we being influenced
Fix this textby those before us,and influencing those who come after us. This
Fix this textis the continuing city in reality that is referred to in the Bible
Fix this textand it is a great characteristic, particularly of our own people, and
Fix this textthere it was that day, just as i£ was a few days later in Sţ. Paul’s
Fix this textCathedral where the view, the picture, was unforgettable - the
Fix this textQueen there attending the funeral of her great Prime Minister,
Fix this textNow I said just now that I knew him well, I did
Fix this textIndeed, I was greatly privileged, and many weekends I have spent
Fix this textin his house and had many great matters to discuss with him from
Fix this texttime to time, I always remember with a sort of sombre pride that
Fix this texton two occasions I disagreed with him,and I assure you, my friends,
Fix this textthat took doing, because he was, of all men, the most formidable.
Fix this textBut one night he said to me at the dinner-table something that I
Fix this textknow he said elsewhere and which I know has now become familiar
Fix this textin the books. We were talking about war because this was a time
Fix this textof war. It was on every night, every day* And he gave me his
Fix this textgreat slogan -
Fix this textIn War, Fury
Fix this textIn Defeat, Defiance
Fix this textIn Victory, Magnanimity
Fix this textIn Peace, Goodwill.
Fix this textIt's easy and takes two shakes of a lamb's tail!
