It is proposed that the new Commonwealth Aid Roads  

legislation will provide as follows  

(1) period of five years from 1st July, 1964  

subject to matching contributions by State Governments  

in respect of that portion of the grant known as the  

additional grant, the Commonwealth will make available  

to the States over five year period total sum of  

£375,000,000 for the construction, reconstruction and  

maintenance of roads;  

the basic grant payable to the States by the Commonwealth  

will total Â£330,000,000 distributed over the five  

as follows s-

964-65  

62,000,000  

1965-66  

64 000,000  

1966-67  

66,000,000  

1967-68  

68,000,000  

1968-69  

70,000,000  

(4) in addition to these basic grants of Â£330,000,000, the  

Commonwealth will make available to the States further  

sums totalling Â£ 45 000,000 on the basis of Â£1 for every  

£1 allocated by the State Governments from their own  

resources for expenditure on roads over and above  

certain base amounts. These are the amounts required  

to be allocated by States for roads expenditure in  

order to qualify under the present legislation for the  

additional grant in 1963 64 The amount of such  

additional grants by the Commonwealth will bo subject  

to annual limits as follows ?-

1965-66  

6,000,000  

1966-67  

9,000,000  

1967-68  

12,000,000  

1968-69  

15,000,000  

the State Governments will be required to ensure, as at  

present, that not less than 40 per cent, of funds  

made available by the Commonwealth will be spent on  

roads in rural areas, other than highways, main roads  

and trunk roads;
