EDITOR’S NOTES.

The events of the week from 7th to 15th

August certainly make it historic, and have

left an impression not easily erased. On the

7th we first heard the stupendous fact of the

invention and employment of the atomic

bomb; on the 15th, from the British and Aus-

tralian Prime Ministers we listened with glad

thankfulness to the announcement that hos-

tilities had ceased.

We -have rejoiced in the cessation of

hostilities, and offered thanksgiving for the

noble courage and self-sacrifice of the men of

the Services—British, Australian, American

and Russian who have stood between us

and invasion, perhaps destruction; the

women of the Services also, and many un-

named and unknown who helped in the

tremendous effort of the past six years.

In regard to the atomic bomb, from

opinions expressed by leaders, both military

and religious,. by commentators and many

thoughtful citizens, emerge two convictions:

first, the absolute responsibility of the

United Nations to ensure that this war has

finally been the war to end war,” that never

again can Christian civilisation allow that

which would certainly mean the end of civil-

isation second, that the making of Peace is

much moie difficult thing than carrying on

war. Among other opinions more extreme

we quote those of Winston Churchill and the

Archbishop of Canterbury. The former said

in his statement on the atomic bomb: “This

levelation of secrets of nature long merci
