SPEECH DAY

THE PRIME MINISTER, THE RIGHT HONOURABLE R.G.MENZIES, C.H., Q.C., M.P.

First of all would like to say word about the Chairman. It

is not exaggeration when say he is the best Chairman have known.

His opening speech lasted 55 seconds and the second one for minutes

10 seconds, and if you have suffered under Chairman as frequently as

have you would know how like him.

When the Chairman asked the Headmaster to deliver his address,

my mind ran back to the celebrated story of Clarence Darrow, noted

criminal lawyer in the United States. In the United States they have

an engaging habit of inviting people to be guest speakers somewhere

to come across the continent to some club or association, whatever

it may be, and have even been told, although justice has not yet

been done to me, they put in corner of the invitation ”Fee 500 dollars

very civilised country Indeedl The celebrated Darrow went once from

New York to Chicago and as he was notable speaker the Chairman thought

the opportunity was too good tp miss, and as one or two chairmen

have known have done, he spoke for about 40 minutes, positively basking

in the limelight, and at the end of 40 minutes he turned around to

singularly depressed Darrow and said: ”1 will now ask Mr. Darrow to

deliver his address.” Darrow got up like shot and said: ”1 don't

mind doing that at all, my address is West 42, No. 15 ... and

am going there right away.” Mr. Chairman, that would not happen to you,

and that is why approve of you as Chairman,

The second thing want to say, is it was not really difficult

to get me to come. First of all the Headmaster although he has

disarming manner, has rather peremptory way of dealing with

politicians and when he said ”dome”, came. If he lacked anything

in authority my magnificent friend and colleague, Eric Hardson, would

have ordered me to come even if had first said No.

Those are two reasons for coming, but the third is think the

best of the lot, because the third is that have spoken here before, in

this hall and on this platform. Although there is perhaps no boy here

today who was here on that occasion, would like to tell the successors

of those boys that they have an immortal and soft place in my heart.
