SPEECH BY PRIME MINISTER OF AUSTRALIA, Mr. R.G. MENZIES,

AT LUNCHEON OF AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION, in MALAYA,

on 11th December, 1959

MR. MENZIES: Sir, ladies and gentlemen: have made

fairly good bargain. have said might be 10 minutes

and do you want me to hold that? (Laughter) Alright,

well will hold it. Yes. It is awful, isn't it? (Laughter)

This, think, is being broadcast, or recorded. It doesn't

help you to hear it this machine, does it? Well, you are lucky.

Sir, first of all, would like to say to you

that appreciate that bit of yours about the Australians

and the New Zealanders. You fell into an error or two. On

of them was that you said that the New Zealanders had beaten

Australia at Rugby. That is not true. (Laughter).

They beat New South Wales. (Laughter). (Applause)

And the second point would like to make on our

joint relationships now, forgetting Malaya for the moment,

is this that as every Australian knows now that New Zealand

has got over the habit of having ex-Australians as her

Cabinet Ministers (Laughter) ever since then, it has been

conceded by Australians that New Zealanders are slightly

superior race (Laughter). But, being broad-minded, and

practical, we have no objection to that so long as we get the bett

of the bargain (Laughter) And, by and large, this is how it

stands.

Now, think the first thing that ought to do

is to thank you on behalf of my wife and myself for having

us here. We have been travelling around at rate of knots.

hardly know now whether we have been north, south, east or

west, but it has all been full of interest and when get

back home and recover consciousness, take map and work it

all out, and discover where have been, will make

pretty good story of it and believe me, my wife will make

very much better one. (Laughter)

But, must say, that do like the general

atmosphere in Malaya. think it is active and good and

progressive. know it is progressive because about

30 years ago, in order to oblige friend of mine who was
