Fix this textTHE CHALLENGE TO EDUCATION
Fix this textIt would perhaps be prudent to say, at the very outset, that I am
Fix this textnot here as the head of a government making a policy speech, outlining new
Fix this textpolicies or forcasting future financial benefits and burdens. I have been
Fix this texthonoured by your invitation to make the Inaugural Address at the second annual
Fix this textmeeting of the Australian College of Education. That very great teacher.
Fix this textDr, Darling, wrote to me "we would like you to speak on the theme of Aùstralia
Fix this textin the next twenty years and what you, as the leader of the country, expect
Fix this textor desire from us the teachers."
Fix this textThis opportunity I have accepted, if I may say so, not as one
Fix this textwho seeks to express a Government or a party point of view but as one who
Fix this texthas been privileged to have something to do, small enough in all conscience,
Fix this textwith recent educational advancement in Australia, something which had the
Fix this textsupport of all parties; and as one with a profound belief in the tremendous
Fix this textsignificance of the teacher’s calling. What I have to say will therefore be
Fix this textmore philosophical, in the non-technical sense, than political, in the
Fix this textnarrow and partisan sense.
Fix this textFor indeed, your voluntary responsibilities are very great.
Fix this textYou have established this College to help you to discharge them better and
Fix this textbetter. You have made it clear that you look on teaching not merely as a
Fix this textmeans of earning a living but as a vocation which will enable you to
Fix this textcontribute to the fullness of life.
Fix this textTo do anything to help or to stimulate is therefore a singular
Fix this textprivilege.
Fix this textEducation and educators are beyond doubt confronting a great
Fix this textchallenge both material, intellectual and spiritual.
Fix this textAt a later stage I will endeavour to bring these elements into
Fix this textassociation. For the present, however, I will speak of the material challenge,
Fix this texta challenge which is to be heard all round the world.
Fix this textIt's easy and takes two shakes of a lamb's tail!
