Fix this textCENSURE MOTION
Fix this textStatement in the House of Representatives by
Fix this textthe Rt, Hon, the Prime Minister, Sir Robert
Fix this textMenzies, on Thursday, l8th April, 1963 ·
Fix this textI must say. Mr. Speaker, that I listened, as I always
Fix this textdo, with great interest to the i^rords of my old friend the
Fix this texthonourable member for Bonython (Mr. Makin), who became, I
Fix this textthought at one moment, quite impassioned on this subject,
Fix this textI do want to point out to him with all friendliness that he
Fix this textfell into a few errors. He made a demand for parliamentary
Fix this textcontrol in this matter. Everything, that has been done - and
Fix this textwhich is now the subject of attack - has been done under
Fix this textstatute of this Parliament and through an instrumentality
Fix this textset up under a statute passed by this Parliament.
Fix this textI would have suggested to my honourable friend that
Fix this texthe be a little cautious about invoking the authority of
Fix this textParliament when, in the case of his own party authority has
Fix this textbeen handed over to the 36 men. Honourable members opposite
Fix this textmay moan and may groan, but the Leader of the Opposition
Fix this text(Mr, Calwell) would not be allowed to move a censure motion
Fix this texthere today unless it came within the authority of the 36.
Fix this textJust remember that fact. Then the honourable gentleman
Fix this textattacked the Act of Parliament. This is a censure motion,
Fix this textand presumably, like its happy predecessor last week or the
Fix this textweek before, is designed to defeat the Government and produce
Fix this textan election. It is wonderful to realise how passionately
Fix this textfond the Labour Party has suddenly become of an election
Fix this textfought on the television law. Already two elections have
Fix this textgone by since the law was passed, and I do not recall the
Fix this textLabour Party making a point of it at either. Of course, the
Fix this textreason why it did not make a point of it in either election
Fix this textwas that it was convenient on those occasions to play for the
Fix this textsupport of some, at least, of the commercial television
Fix this textstations.
Fix this textWell, Sir, that prudence has now been abandoned.
Fix this textThe Labour Party— with authority, I trust, from its outside
Fix this text36 - has nailed its colours to the mast. In this debate it
Fix this texthas said "We are for nationalization of television. If we
Fix this textcome into office we will take the earliest possible steps to
Fix this textwipe out the existing commercial television licences and put
Fix this textthe whole thing into the hands of the Government," No longer
Fix this textis there any mystery about that policy, I hope it will be well
Fix this textremembered when the time comes. In due course - some time off
Fix this textyet - we will be having an election.
Fix this textThen, my honourable friend got rather heated, I thought
Fix this textif I could apply such a word to so mild a man - about a licence
Fix this textbeing given to a wealthy group. I hope he will forgive me if,
Fix this textlooking at this report, I point out - and I am reading the
Fix this textnames of applicants that I never heard of until we got the
Fix this textreport - that Community Television Limited - it was a splendid
Fix this textarrangement - is comprised of 1,000,000 shareholders of 5s«
Fix this textshares hold by returned servicemen and returned servicemen^
Fix this textclubs; members and affiliated branches of the Australian
Fix this textLabour Party (Victorian Branch); and then, to my joy and
Fix this textsurprise, members and affiliated branches of the Liberal and
Fix this textCountry Party, I did not know they had this money. Then
Fix this textIt's easy and takes two shakes of a lamb's tail!
