NOTE

■ Dictated at 9*45 a.m. 11th November 1975

The Governor-General rang me In my chambers

before arrived this morning and on my arrival my Associate

made telephone connection with Yarralumla and the Governor

General spoke, to me. He told me that the discussions

between the Prime Minister and Mr. Fraser were proceeding;

that he, the Governor-General, had to attend the Armistice

Day ceremony and that it was likely that the Prime Minister

would see him round about o’clock. He said that he had

to consider the possibility that the Prime Minister might

have cabled the Queen Informing her that he, the Prime

Minister, had lost confidence In the Governor-General and

perhaps seeking the withdrawal of his commission. He said

that whilst that was an eventuality which might seem far-

fetched it had to be recognised as possibility. He

said that none the less he proposed to follow the course

which he had outlined to me and upon which had given him

advice.

■ He said of course it was possible that the Prime

Minister might inform him that he had been forced to give

in to Mr. Fraser and to agree to general election in the

first half of the New Year in return for the passage of the

budget. He said, however, that if that announcement by the

Prime Minister did not eventuate, he would proceed with the

course on which he had determined. He told me that he

would expect the Prime Minister, now that- it was known that

had attended at Admiralty House, to ask whether had

been consulted, in which event the Governor-General would

inform the Prime Minister that had been consulted and that

had given him advice. He expected the Prime- Minister

to remind him that he, the Prime Minister, had already

advised him that he should not receive advice from anyone

but himself and particularly should not consult me, tc
