Wee Jasper

Monday

Dearest Wife

We are leaving here tomorrow Tuesday for run around the Yarrangobilly

and Kiandra districts. We have had good fun here but the trout are off. There

are very few and river is low and clear and they won’t bite. Even Jack cannot

do any good. We had rough run to this place the last few miles being bad

but we go back by another road which will be better except for the

Murrumbidgee crossing over that we will be towed by horse.

am glad to hear baby is so well and good. There are two little children at the

place where we are camped but they are not as taking in their manners as

she is.

played game of tennis! yesterday. There actually is court here the

Wee JasperTennis Club. The men play with their boots and spurs on there is

only one ball. They lost the other some time ago. The policeman is the best

player. was perfect marvel. There are four houses in the town and three

out of four don’t speak to each other. The black tracker is only one whose

social position is not touchy question. He is half-caste and is married to

white wife. There is store here kept by an Indian but he only has very few

things. The weir site or the ware as they call it is the great topic of

conversation or rather how much they are to get by way of compensation. It

will flood an awful lot of country. There are some splendid maize flats on the

river that will be two hundred feet under water. We went to the site yesterday

it is rough steep and am very tired today but will put in good loaf. The

things are to go by coach today to Yass we go up the river for last try at the

trout tonight and off to Tumut tomorrow. Write to Cooma and will be more

[likely] to get it. Mark it Cooma to be called for. We will be at Kiandra and

Jindabyne before we get to Cooma but will be going fast and might miss

letters. am making this long one as may not get chance to write good

letter for the next few days. feel very much better already. wish had

month here. Your loving husband
