Content Description
Papers documenting Andrew Crocker's role as art coordinator at the Papunya Western Desert community in the 1980s.They include scrapbooks, news cuttings, articles by and about Crocker, articles by other writers, correspondence, children's drawings and photographs. The photographs, largely uncaptioned, include images of Papunya Tula artists and their work. Correspondents include Charles Duguid, Malcolm Fraser and Edward de Bono.

Biographical / Historical
Crocker studied law at Cambridge, UK. In 1972, he was employed by the Australian Council for the Arts as an Assistant Project Officer in work associated with indigenous art. From 1979-1981 Crocker worked in Alice Springs as the manager of Papunya Tula Artists Ltd, where he was involved in issues relating to exhibiting of paintings by indigenous artists.

Front of scrapbook – photographs of indigenous artists and their artworks. Towards the back of the book, photographs of indigenous people and their communities.
Scrapbooks, 1970s-1980s (File 3-6) - Box 1
Contain newspaper cuttings mostly relating to issues to do with Australian indigenous peoples but also some relating to indigenous peoples in other parts of the world.
Papers, Early 1980s (File 7) - Box 1
Manuscript and typescript drafts of notes, reports and submissions by Crocker relating to issues to do with promoting of indigenous art and artists. Also includes biographical notes about some indigenous artists, possibly relating to Crocker's work on the book 'Mr Sandman bring me a dream'.

Correspondence relating to positions which Crocker enquired about/applied for (1970-1983), together with his Certificate of Australian Citizenship (1988). Also a copy of his obituary (Sept 1988)

Correspondence relating to support for indigenous artists and possible programs for, and exhibitions of, indigenous artworks.

Correspondence, much relating to Crocker's involvement with 'Survival International', London, a charitable organisation devoted to the welfare and rights of indigenous minorities and tribal peoples. Also correspondence relating to other issues including distribution of films and support of indigenous land rights.
