Fix this textCHURCHILL MEMORIAL TRUST APPEAL
Fix this text1 ST FEBRUARY. 1965
Fix this textWhat we are proposing to do in Australia is to set
Fix this textabout having an appeal which will probably open and close on
Fix this textone day - February 28 th, 1965·
Fix this textYou may think this is a little dramatic but we are
Fix this textcelebrating a very dramatic man. Of course donations will be
Fix this textreceived - and are, I believe, already being received - before
Fix this textFebruary 28th, But our modest ambition is that by the close
Fix this textof that day, we in Australia will have raised £A 1 ,000,000,
Fix this textWe believe that we will. u e believe that if wo can do that,
Fix this textmuch larger sums of money can be expected from much larger and
Fix this textricher countries.
Fix this textNow having said that, may I say this to you in the
Fix this textbroad, I went down the other day to Westminster Hall and I
Fix this textwas pleased to see how many young men and women and boys and
Fix this textgirls were passing through Westminster Hall, because, you
Fix this textknow, men are easily forgotten and the names of even the
Fix this textgreatest of men may suffer some kind of eclipse for a while.
Fix this textBut it is vital that this name should never be
Fix this textforgotten and it is vital that this man should never be
Fix this textforgotten. It is vital that his spirit, touched with immortal-
Fix this textity as it was, should continue to be immortal, a living thing,
Fix this texta continuing presence among many generations to come in
Fix this textcountries which speak the English language - a language in
Fix this textwhich he, by the miracle of science, was able to address so
Fix this textmany scores and scores of millions of people during the war,
Fix this textreaching them, touching them, inspiring them, driving
Fix this textpessimism underground. None of us who lived through all this
Fix this textcould ever forgot it, I think we have a great task here to
Fix this textsee that it is never forgotten.
Fix this textSometimes in the course of one’s life one incurs a
Fix this textdebt and the debt may perhaps bo discharged by one blow, by
Fix this textone payment, by one act, but this is not a debt of that kind.
Fix this textThis is a debt which is part of our inheritance 5 it will never
Fix this textbe fully discharged.
Fix this textIf our grandchildren and great-grandchildren are living
Fix this textin freedom, they will be his debtors, because at the crucial
Fix this textmoment in modern history it was he more than anybody else who
Fix this textinspired the public will and who made victory a certainty.
Fix this textThis is a continuing debt, and a continuing debt is not paid
Fix this textmerely by having a monument, great though it may be, merely by
Fix this texthaving some inscription on some tablet in some place. It must
Fix this textbe paid in a continuing fashion.
Fix this textAnd that is the beauty of this conception which was
Fix this textworked out hero in this country and was taken to us and to
Fix this textother people and was understood and acted upon. This is a
Fix this textmarvellous conception because in 200 years’ time, there will
Fix this textbe Churchill fellows, men and women of all sorts of colours,
Fix this textall sorts of religious beliefs, all sorts of experiences,
