To McEwen from O’Sullivan,  

Suez story takes headlines, Mr, Casey in comment  

which given excellent run is quoted as describing the action  

of Egyptian Government as abrupt and high handed. Ho said  

the whole matter was most disturbing and was engaging the  

urgent attention of the Australian Government, Ship owners  

representativos in Sydney said closure of the Canal woùld  

bo severe blow to Australia-Mediterranean trade particularly  

with Italy but would not have disruptive effect on trade  

with United Kingdom or other European countries. They said  

route around Capetown is not more expensive than through  

Suez whore duos are high. However quicker turnover of  

cargoes on Suez route was Important in Australian wool  

soiling season. The freight charges on wool shipments  

wore not likely to rise if Suez closed but there would be  

delays in getting wool to European markets.  

Dr, Evatt speaking in Sydney said Australian Labour  

Party is preparing throe year economic programme. Ho â€˜  

attacked Federal Government for being "totally incapable of  

meeting the deepening economic crisis".  

Gable story in "Telegraph" says Duke of Edinburgh’s  

Industrial Study Conference is estimated to havo cost more  

than Â£500,000. It says Australians who attended are  

wondering whether their Journey has really boon worthwhile,  

"Sun-Herald" in well splashed story headed  

Monzios-stay away Prime Minister says "the fooling is  

growing in the Liberal Party that the place for Mr, Monzios  

is in Canberra and that ho should bo hero now, It adds  

"Mr. Monzios has been Prime Minister for record term and  

this has prompted people including members of his own party  

to wonder whether ho will want to continue in office for  

much longer. Whatever Mr, Monzios decision is one thing is  

clear from the last six months Government cannot  

effectively function when it has doubts as to whether its  

own leader intends to remain in the post".
