SUEZ OMAL

1, Friday, 2hth August«

We had tlie first meeting of the Committee of Five.

The representatives present were:

AUSTRALIA â€” Rt. Hon. R. G. Mens ies, CH. QC., MP.,

Prime Minister.

ETHIOPIA â€” H.E. Mr. Aklilou Hahtewold,

Foreign Minister,

IRAN â€” H.E, Dr. A.G. Ardalan,

Foreign Minister

SWEDEN â€” H.B. to. Haggloff

Swedish Ambassador to the U, K.

UNITED STATES— H.E. Mr. Dulles

Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs

(to, Loy Henderson)

Dulles Â¡brought with him Loy Henderson, an Ambaâsador

with enormous expo? ience in the Middle East. Henderson will from now

on take Dulles's place.

The minutes of the meeting are attached.

The most important matter we discussed was whether, in the

event of Nasser expressing willingness to confer with us, we should he

willing to go to Cairo if he stipulated for it.

know that Eden is hostile to the Cairo idea because,

together with some of his colleagues, he things we should do nothing

to enhance Nasser's prestige.

At our meeting, however, Dulles pointed out, with irresistible

logic, that it would be quite useless if Nasser agreed to meeting

in Geneva but sent only representative to attend it.
