STEVENSON, Mrs. J. P.

BY AIRMAIL.

CONI2435

Dud/MP.

L.2749.

Ich August, 1068.

MEGNANDLR FOHI

The Director,

News and Information Dureau,

Department of the Interior,

Canberra, Ashet.

Thank you for your memorandum (W68/161) of July 24, enelosing correspondence

received by the Frime Minister’s Secretary, Miss Hazel Craig, from the Rev. J.P.

Stevenson of Melbourne.

Then received Mr. Stevenson’s first letter (dated April 10, 1061), was

impressed.

Fresupposing that ""publicity"" for the

""Refntour"" project to be

undertaken by Mrs. and Miss Stevenson would concern, in practical way, an

Australian effort to aid ""the thousands of under-privileged women and children""

(the phrase in Mr. Stevensons), was warm in my offer of help. In my reply

said: ""I shall be very happy to do all can to assist, and since am in close

Lauch with Heuters, London, and other newspaper sources, could very simply ast

as an agent..1 trust that Mrs. Stevenson’s tour will most with all the

suecess auch splenid enterprise deserves.

Since that letter was written, we have received about 7,000 words (a

conservative estimate) of ""correspondence â€“ letters and roneoed ""reports"" filled

with the most blatant self publicity it has ever been my lot to read.

From the attached extracts from this correspondence, you will understand

that my enthusiasm quickly sickened and then died. To have attempted to release

the material Mr. Stevenson has sent for publication and presumably for promotion,

would, believe, have damaged the credit of this Hureau, and, too, the credit

mlich Mrs. und Wiss Stevenson could Justifiably expest to command an resching

London.

In his letter of July 7, 1962, to Miss Craig, Mr. Stevenson complainst

""So far the various papers, etc., that have asked the Nora and Information Bureau

at Australia House for photos and details of my wife’s progress have drawn an

absolute and total blank, nor have my various letters been answered over period

of fifteen months"".

He have had two, perhaps three, telephone queries, each of which was

answered by our Fress Officer, Mr. Scumberg, who supplied auch information as we

then had at hand.

In response to one of these enquiries, photograph (the only

copy supplied) of Mrs. and Miss Stevenson with vehicle, was passed on.

ie for replying to Mr. Stevenson’s letters, we have replied to three of

chem.

Theme were the only letters that called for replys the remainder of

his correspondence mainly concerned the promotion of the Stevenson first person

singular.

on June 10, 1068, (barely three weeks before he wrote his objectionable

letter to Miss Craig), received an air-letter from Mr. Stevenson, early in which

he prote: Thile thers in probably Little that von enn de at the mament en regards

muhlleity, think it is nor Line to start going into the question of who in geing

To handle my wife’s press releases, broadcasting and T.V. arrangements, etc., when

ehe und our daughter reach London in the (English) autumn"".

Later

in the same letter, Mr. Stevenson makes these commentsi-

eeeeeeeit is of the utmost importance that she should not have

to start the broadcasting and T.V. ball rolling for herself

after reaching London..
