Scope and Contents
MS 6428 comprises manuscripts and typescripts of novels, plays, short stories and articles and extensive correspondence. Works among the manuscripts include Bring larks and heroes, Confederates, The cut-rate kingdom, Halloran's little boat, Ned Kelly and the city of bees, Passenger, Season in purgatory, The survivor, A victim of the Aurora, "Bligh", and "Burke and Wills". A large proportion of the correspondence is with publishers, literary agents and editors including Philip Ziegler, Tessa Sayle, James Moad, Thomas Stewart, Peter Grose, Donald Horne, Peter Cross, W.R. Comprising Keneally, Thomas. The Childermas. A typescript of the unpublished play by Thomas Keneally, originally commissioned by the Australian Committee of Responsibility for Children of Vietnam, and performed at The Old Tote Theatre in 1968. Includes the poem 'Childermas', written by Judith Wright for the play.

This addition of papers was acquired under the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme. They consist of personal papers of Thomas Keneally, mostly relating to his involvement with the Australian Republican Movement (ARM), which was launched in Sydney on 7 July 1991. Keneally played a prominent role in the establishment of the Movement, and was the first Chair. The papers detail the early stages of the development of the Movement, as well as documenting the continuing efforts of the campaign, and cover the period 1990-1996.
The Library has arranged the correspondence, publicity material and newspaper clippings by year, and the administrative papers into precise date order.

Also included is a paper written by Franca Arena on 'how the Movement started' (1991).

Included are papers relating to press releases, brochure design, fundraising activities, public meetings, workshops, campaign plans, and logo design. Also included are a folder of papers, publicity material and press clippings relating specifically to the launch of the party on 7 July 1991, letters to newspapers, and publicity brochures 1991-1996.

The bulk of the papers comprise speech notes, speeches, articles and lectures prepared by Keneally. Also includes two speeches by Malcolm Turnbull, and one by Paul Kelly.

Miscellaneous papers relating to the Australian Republican Movement (File 118 to 121) - Box 15-16
They include copies of an analysis of the High Court's Mabo decision, transcripts of interviews and addresses by various people which relate to republican issues, journal articles and papers of interest to the republican cause, and speeches by the Prime Minister, Paul Keating. Also included are a report prepared by the Republican Advisory Committee, which was chaired by Malcolm Turnbull (1 September 1993), a magazine entitled Australians and the monarchy published by the National Centre for Australian Studies, Monash University, 1993, a booklet of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia, papers from the Direct Democracy Seminar (7 July 1994), and the speakers list from the National Strategies Conference convened by the Economic Planning Advisory Commission (1994), 1991-1995.
