Dear Sir Robert Menzies

Keble College was founded in 1870 in order to afford university

education to men of ability without regard to their social or financial

standing.

Although in Oxford the colleges bear major part of the cost of

teaching and research, they get no direct financial assistance from

Government sources; they are self-governing institutions which control

their own affairs. This means that they are the private sector in higher

education, but it also means that they depend for their support on private

benefaction.

Over the centuries the older Oxford colleges have built up substantial

endowments which provide an average college income per student place of

about 2300 year. At Keble it is still less than E100. Although Keble

has always maintained its policy of providing higher education at as low

cost as possible, the College can no longer keep pace with its expanding

needs without help.

The success of the Centenary Year Appeal will secure the future of the

College and enable it to send out its proper share of graduates to serve in

all walks of life with the same distinction in the next hundred years as in

the last. We have written to you because we think that you are the kind of

thoughtful person who would be prepared to extend your charitable interests

to include this Appeal. We hope that we may count on your support.

Yours sincerely,

Murchael Centrar
