Fix this texteducation to men of ability without regard to their social or financial
Fix this textstanding.
Fix this textAlthough in Oxford the colleges bear a major part of the cost of
Fix this textteaching and research, they get no direct financial assistance from
Fix this textGovernment sources; they are self-governing institutions which control
Fix this texttheir own affairs. This means that they are the private sector in higher
Fix this texteducation, but it also means that they depend for their support on private
Fix this textbenefaction.
Fix this textOver the centuries the older Oxford colleges have built up substantial
Fix this textendowments which provide an average college income per student place of
Fix this textabout 2300 a year. At Keble it is still less than E100. Although Keble
Fix this texthas always maintained its policy of providing higher education at as low a
Fix this textcost as possible, the College can no longer keep pace with its expanding
Fix this textneeds without help.
Fix this textThe success of the Centenary Year Appeal will secure the future of the
Fix this textCollege and enable it to send out its proper share of graduates to serve in
Fix this textall walks of life with the same distinction in the next hundred years as in
Fix this textthe last. We have written to you because we think that you are the kind of
