Scope and Contents

The collection comprises correspondence, draft chapters, final chapters, galley proofs and book reviews for the book Sweet mothers, sweet maids : journeys from Catholic childhoods edited by Dominica and Kate Nelson.

The 20 contributors to the book were Val Hawkes, Deirdre Cook, Veronica Brady, Pauline Toner, Eileen Balsamo, Anne Gorman, Lorna Hannan, Barbara Rooney, Babette Francis, Mary Larnach-Jones, Kerry Eccles, Therese Radic, Kathleen Curmi, Anna Rutherford, Caty Kyne, Lilyan Staniforth, Margaret O'Sullivan, Pamela Winter, Venetia Nelson and Amanda Lohrey.

Dominica and Kate Nelson were the co-editors of the anthology Sweet mothers, sweet maids : journeys from Catholic childhoods published by Penguin Australia Ltd in 1986.

Letters written to and received from possible contributors during 1984 - 86. Some of the letters offered advice on the rewriting of chapters after an initial edit had been done or ask for photographs of significant events in the lives of contributors. Others declined the invitation to contribute to the book. The file also contains a set of form letters sent out to all contributors over this period which document the progress of the publication (File 13) - Box 3

Predominantly copies of all outward correspondence sent by the editors from 1983 - 86. There are a small number of letters giving advice on publishing (File 14) - Box 3

Details of the book launch on 7 November 1986 with a list of those attending. There is also an itinerary for media interviews along with a tape of some of these interviews. The file contains many letters of thanks and congratulations on the publication of the book (File 20) - Box 4
