Introduction
Scope and Contents
The papers consist mainly of secondary source material relating to women's issues. They include journal articles, newscuttings, notes, papers, reports, information circulars and women's journals. A substantial amount of the research material (6 folders) has been collected on the campaigns for equal pay for women both in Australia and overseas. Other subject files include women and the media, women in the Australian Public Service and women's organisations. There are also papers from women's conferences and miscellaneous copies of various women's journals and newsletters. One file contains statistical information on the Canberra Women's Refuge for the year 1975 and a small amount of correspondence relating to its activities.

Provenance
The papers were received by the Library in 1991. They were once part of the collection of the Women's Studies Unit at the Australian National University.
Other papers originally part of the Women's Archive and now held by the National Library include those of Beryl Henderson (MS 9360), Edna Ryan (MS 9140), and Thelma Hunter (MS 9353).
Arrangement
The collection was arranged in files with titles when received by the Library. The arrangement of papers within these files and the file titles have been preserved by the Library.
Biographical Note
Teacher, historian and feminist. Julia Ryan is the daughter of Edna Ryan, feminist and campaigner for women's rights in Australia. Ryan lives in Canberra where she has been active in the women's movement for many years.

Equal pay for women campaign in Australia: subject file, 1957-62. Newscuttings, notes, papers and reports covering the situation in Australia and overseas (File 2-7) - Box 1, 2
January Theory Conference, Mt Beauty, Victoria, 27-29 January, 1973: information circulars about the conference. The main theme for the conference was 'Aspects of the theory of feminism'. Course outline and reading lists for a unit in Women's Studies at the University of Adelaide, 1973. The file also contains miscellaneous papers on women's issues (File 8) - Box 2
Women and Politics Conference, Canberra, 1975: papers presented by Dorothy Peters, Rosalie Rosenfelt and Sandra Smith, Yvonne McComb and Kathleen Taperell. There is also a series of background papers providing brief summaries, lists of names and statistics of women in Parliament, the workforce and other issues covered during the conference. The folder also contains four newsletters of the Australian National Advisory Committee International Women's Year, 1974-75 (File 9-10) - Box 2
Canberra Women's Refuge, 1975-77. The majority of material is statistical information gathered in 1975 on the use of the Refuge and its clients. There is a small amount of correspondence, 1976-77, including a letter written by Julia Ryan in April 1977 resigning from her position as Public Officer for the Refuge.
