BIBLIONEWS

Book Collectors’ Society of Australia

May, 1963

207th Issue

Vol. 16, No.

THE FIRST PUBLISHED POEM BY BARCROFT BOAKE

Introductory Note by Keast Burke

newspaper research by Watty Fielder

Shortly after the Rolf Boldrewood Bibliography (No. of the Studies) had gone to

press, there came under notice Boake's "metrical address to Rolf Boldrewood" to which

reference had been made by A.G. Stephens in the Memoir which he had penned for the 1697

Angus Robertson collected edition volume which incidentally was copyrighted by

The Bulletin, though never published by that firm.

The reference appears on page 199 of the memoir; it is here stated that the

address in question appeared in the Al bury Banner, the same being "Boake’s first

printed composition" Appeal was made to fellow-member and friend, Watty Fielder, and

his only known complete file of that paper and in due course the mail brought copy

of the stanzas in question and these are now reprinted below, from The Albury Banner

and Wodonga Express of October 9th 1891.'*

TO ROLF BOLDREWOOD

cannot climb fame’s tower and ring

An ever-sounding chime,

only have the art to string

Poor phrases into rhyme,

Nor can strike that subtle chord

Of melody flung heavenward,

Like those whose names are deeply scored

Upon the walls of time.

However faint, yet can catch

gentle undertone;

However humble, yet snatch

Of song to call my own—

An echo from that alpine height

Too steep for me, yet still in sight,

Where emulating swallow flight,

The songs of these have flown.

Take then these verses from afar,

From where the Snowy bent

In crystal arching o’er the bar

Thunders in fierce descent,

To where, far-spreading on the plain,

The floods that never see the main,

The waters of the Cooper, drain

Full half continent;

FOOTNOTE: A.G.S. also tells us that "Boake wrote some

Memoriam, Arthur Biscay'" and that these were also printed in gjTher appear

this tribute would be the poet’s second composition to be print

to have been collected.
