VICTORIAN

NATIONAL PARKS

ASSOCIATION

NEWS LETTER

No. 24

eJuly, 1959

Latrobe Island (Snake Island)

Following correspondence, we have referred this to

the Lands Department, advising that the V.N.P.A. con-

siders the area to be suitable, at some stage, for

addition to Wilson’s Promontory National Park, and

that consequently the Association would be opposed

to any subdivision of the area or sale for freehold

purposes.

Alpine National Park

This Association now has two liaison officers, Messrs.

Mann and Richards, acting between the V.N.P.A. and

the committee formed by the Federation of Victorian

Walking Clubs for prosecution of project to collect

and digest information on this area relating to recom-

mendations for National Park.

The V.N.P.A. has recommended that there be no

altitude minimum regarding alpine reserves.

Export of Native Fauna

separate article in this issue explains the forma-

tion of the Combined Animal Welfare Organisation

of Victoria. Their address is Box 250B, G.P.O., Mel-

bourne. (C. J. Lauer, Chairman.)

Northern Territory National Trust

We have been informed of the formation of this

body whose Hon. Secretary E. Carter) may he

contacted through Box 99, P.O.. Alice Springs.

You Yangs

It is learned with interest that sum of <£70.000

is to be made available to the Forests Commission

to restore an area from which road making materials

have been taken.

The Dandenongs

The President accepted an invitation by .the Lilydale

Shire Council and addressed the members on the

V.N.P.A. proposals. Although Government assistance

to the Shire for compensation payments has been

promised, we cannot ease our vigilance on this matter

until the final plan has been approved.

Mr. Kilburn attended the Annual Meeting of the

“Save the Dandenongs League” as V.N.P.A. representa-

tive and reported that the Guest Speaker, Mr. Porter

(Minister for Local Government), spoke favourably

on preservation matters, promising to introduce this

year amendments to the Town and Country Planning

Act. This legislation would give the general public

right to be heard when planning authority was con-

sidering an application for change in zoning.

The Professor of Botany at the University of Mel-

bourne was elected President of the “Save the Dande-

nongs League” at this meeting.

The League, incidentally, was lacking in represen-

tation from the Emerald area —perhaps some V.N.P.A.

reader may be interested?

MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTIONS

Members are reminded that their Annual Subscrip-

tions are due in July for the year 1959/60.

NOTICE OF MEETING

Theatrette, Latrobe Street, Melbourne. (Entrance from

Latrobe Street.)

All members should endeavour to attend this meet-

ing and to bring with them any friends who may

be interested. Financial members are entitled to vote

for the election of Council for the forthcoming year

and are invited to send their nominations for this

election to the Hon. Secretary.

As in previous years, arrangements will be made

to receive membership subscriptions before and after

the meeting, and once more hot drink and light

refreshment will be provided.

Delegates of Corporate Members

Corporate members wishing representation al the

Annual Meeting should appoint delegate under Rule

3.

Nominations for the Council, 1959-60

Nominations for the election of Council Members

for the coming year will close with the Hon. Secretary,

Mr. J. Ros Garnet, 23 Camdon Street, Pascoe Vale,

on 31st July, 1959.

Guest Speaker

We are pleased to announce that the Director of

the Tourist Development Authority, Mr. M. J. Har-

kins, has kindly consented to address us at the meeting.

ANNUAL V.N.P.A. EXCURSION, 1959

Werribee Gorge has been decided upon as the

venue for this year’s excursion, and it has been

suggested that Saturday, 7th November, be set aside

for this trip. It is hoped to arrange an itinerary

allowing departure from Melbourne between 8.30 a.m.

and a.m., travelling possibly by train and bus, and

returning by p.m., in the city all at cost

of about 15/-.

Look in your next “News Letter” for final particulars.

How infinitely soothing is the sound

Of running water in mountain stream!

Its cadence fills the atmosphere

With liquid music, and its rippling song

Enchants the ear long after sight of it

Is lost until, at length,

It fades and merges with the frosty air.

—from “Bush Idyll”, by Beryl Halinbourg.
