Fix this textROUND THE CORNER
Fix this textBy Noel Semple
Fix this text(continued)
Fix this textThe Nadgee River boasts a charming old deserted
Fix this texthomestead, carefully situated some three miles up-
Fix this textstream just beyond the tidal influence, and we were
Fix this textnot averse to its welcome shelter when a sudden violent
Fix this textthunderstorm drenched us just as we arrived there.
Fix this textA pleasant two days were spent in this vicinity
Fix this textbefore I had to leave my comrade and return to civili-
Fix this textzation, first making northwards to the cleared valley
Fix this textknown as Wally Newtons and lying practically in the
Fix this textshadow of Tumbledown Mountain, then westerly into
Fix this textthe coastal ranges which delimit the Reserve and add
Fix this textyet another facet to its already abundant variety.
Fix this textHere are spectacular views of the coast, fine eucalypt
Fix this textforest, moorland ridges, and in the creeks belts of
Fix this textjungle. Then at last we came into the shambles of
Fix this textlogged and fired forests and the forestry road which
Fix this textheads back to Narrabarba and the Princes Highway.
Fix this textThe first stage of our walk to Nadgee took us
Fix this textthrough the country east of Mallacoota which the
Fix this textV.N.P.A. has campaigned so vigorously to have added
Fix this textto the existing Mallacoota National Park. Country
Fix this textvery different to Nadgee is this; for coastline here we
Fix this texthave a long unbroken beach right to Cape Howe,
Fix this textbacked by high sand dunes, and the low pink granite
Fix this textof Gabo Island always in sight. Behind the dunes,
Fix this textin swampy flats running back to the Howe Ranges,
Fix this textlie the beautiful and little known lakes, Barracouta
Fix this textand Wau Wauka, with reeds and rushes, ti-tree and
Fix this textbanksia surrounding. Howe Hill looks fine from here
Fix this textand it was with some regret that we had to forego the
Fix this textmagnificent view which must be afforded from its
Fix this textsummit.
Fix this textYes, this country has its own attractions, too; quite
Fix this textdifferent and ideally complementary to those of the
Fix this textNadgee Reserve. All conservation-minded folk will
Fix this texthope that an enlightened Victorian Government will
Fix this textsoon match its New South Wales counterpart by pro-
Fix this textclaiming this easternmost corner of our State as a
Fix this textNational Park. The total 60.000 acres, from Malla-
Fix this textcoota to the Merrika River, could well be one of
Fix this textAustralia’s finest reserves.
Fix this textAN ALPINE NATIONAL PARK
Fix this textThe Federation of Victorian Walking Clubs, at the
Fix this textinvitation of your Council, has set up a sub-committee
Fix this textto study the problem of a National Park in our alpine
Fix this textcountry. Under the chairmanship of Mr. Ray Whit-
Fix this textford, very good progress has been made in defining
Fix this textthe proposed boundaries. It is hoped that the docu-
Fix this textmentation of the proposal will be ready for submis-
Fix this textsion to the Premier later this year.
Fix this textThe sub-committee is to be commended for the
Fix this textthoroughness with which it has tackled the job.
Fix this textCONFERENCE ON NATIONAL PARKS
Fix this textOn the 19th March last a conference of delegates
Fix this textof Corporate Members and of Ordinary Members was
Fix this textheld and very well attended.
Fix this textThe meeting, spread over almost 12 hours, was
Fix this textespecially valuable in bringing together a body of
Fix this textinformed opinion on National Park problems. Four-
Fix this textteen papers were presented and discussed.
Fix this textIt was directed that a number of the resolutions
Fix this textadopted at the evening session be brought to the notice
Fix this textof the Premier by deputation.

Fix this textto the notice of the Premier by deputation.
Fix this text6. That this Conference urge upon the Government
Fix this textthe need for a National Parks Service for Victoria
Fix this textoperating along the lines set out by Mr. Garnet in his
Fix this textpaper.
Fix this textOur Hon. Secretary, Mr. J. Ros Garnet, will be
Fix this textabsent from the State for the whole of August. He
Fix this texthas asked that intending correspondents refrain from
Fix this textdirecting matter to him during that period.
